Two Piece Knitted Dress with Crochet Trim Pattern #106

Size 34-36

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton, 11 balls, or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord, 33 balls. Circular needle No. 2. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4. 2 celluloid knitting needles No. 2.

Gauge: 10 rows make 1 inch. 15 sts make 2 inches.

Skirt. With circular needle, cast on 345 sts for lower part of skirt. K for 4 inches. 1st decreasing rnd: * K 21, k 2 together, and repeat from * around (330 sts on needle). K for 3 inches. 2nd decreasing rnd: * K 20, k 2 together, and repeat from * around (315 sts on needle). K for 3 inches. Make 4 more decreasing rnds, with 3 inches plain knitting between, taking care to have 1 st less each rnd between decreases. When 6th decreasing rnd is made, there should be 255 sts on needle. K for 2 inches (piece should now measure about 21 inches). Next rnd: Sl 1 st, k 1, pass sl st over k st (a decrease), k 77 sts, k 2 together; then make a ribbing of p 2, k 3 for 9 times; p 2, sl 1 st, k 1, pass sl st over k st (a decrease), k 76 sts, k 2 together; ribbing of p 2, k 3 for 9 times; p 2 (251 sts). Work 3 rnds even, with ribbing at sides. Repeat these 4 rnds 11 times (207 sts). Knit 3 rnds even, then work entirely in ribbing (p 2, k 3), decreasing the 2 extra sts. Work until skirt measures 29 inches. Bind off. With the crochet hook make beading around top for the elastic by 1 tr, ch 2, skip 2 sts of skirt, and 1 tr in 3rd st, and repeat all around. Finish bottom by 1 row of s c in each st. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, * skip 2 sts, 1 d c in next, ch 2, and repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st ch-5. 3rd rnd: Ch 5, d c over d c, ch 2, d c over next d c, and continue around, joining with sl st to 3rd ch of 1st ch-5. 4th rnd: Ch 3, * 2 d c under ch below, 1 d c in next d c, and continue from * around, joining as before. Work one more row of d c over d c, then repeat rnds 2, 3, 4 and 5, and break off.

Blouse. With celluloid needles, cast on 108 sts to start from neck and shoulders. 1st row: K 24, thread over, k 1, thread over, k 10, thread over, k 1, thread over, k 36, thread over, k 1, thread over, k 10, thread over, k 1, thread over, k 24. 2nd row: Knit across, knitting the thread-overs as sts, and purling the st between the thread-overs. Continue working in this fashion, noting that in each pattern row there will be 1 st more in each front section, and 2 sts more in the shoulder and back sections respectively. At the end of the 5th row, make the 1st buttonhole as follows: K 3 sts, bind off 3 sts, pattern across. On the row back, cast on 3 sts where the 3 sts were bound off. Make 4 more buttonholes, with 8 ridges between. Work 4 more ridges (428 sts on needle), ending on wrong side of work. Put front and sleeve sts on 2 stitch holders. Knit the 116 sts for 1 row, turn. 2nd row: P 10, k 96, p 10, turn. K 3rd row. 4th row: P 12, k 92, p 12, turn. K 5th row. Continue in this way adding 2 sts on each side to the purled sections and subtracting 2 sts on each side of the knit section, until piece is all worked in purl. Work in purling until piece measures 10 inches from armhole. Next row: * Work 2 sts together *, repeat between *'s 7 times more, continue to within 16 sts from end, and repeat between *'s 8 times. Work 2 more rows, bind off. Take the front section sts from stitch holders (128 sts), k 55, knit together the last 9 sts of one section with the first 9 sts of other section, lapping right side over left side. K across. Next row: P 10, k 99, p 10. Continue to work same as back from this point on.

Sleeves. K 1 row, and on next row p 14, k 64, p 14. Continue as for back until all sts are p sts, then bind off. Finish bottom of blouse in crochet same as bottom of skirt. Finish neck edge in crochet with 1 row of s c. Finish sleeve with 1 row of s c, 1 row of sps, 1 row of d c. Sew buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
