MATERIAL:
4 skeins Knitting Worsted blue (4 oz. skein)
1 skein Knitting Worsted each red and white (4 oz. skein)
1 pair knitting needles each No. 5 and No. 8
1 crochet hook No. 6 or G
1 stitch holder
6 (7) buttons
Ribbon for hat

GAUGE: 5 sts. = 1 inch

PATTERN:
1st row red: * K1, slip 1 (yarn in front of work) repeat from * across row, end K1
2nd and all even rows: P across row (in same color as preceding row)
3rd row: white: * slip 1 (yarn in front of work), K1, repeat from * across row, end slip 1 (yarn in front of work)
5th blue: like 1st row
7th row red: like 3rd row
9th row white: like 1st row
Cont. to work this way working 2 rows each color and repeating the first 4 rows of pattern.

JACKET:
BACK:
With blue and No. 5 needles cast on 60 (64) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Incr. 3 sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and pattern. With 63 (67) sts. work even until the entire piece measures 8 (8½) inch. or any des. length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 4 sts., at the beg. of the next 2 rows 2 sts. (51 (55) sts. left). Work even for 5½ (5¾) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 4 (6) rows 8 (6) sts., rem. 19 (19) sts. bind off for neck.
NOTE: For Boys make 6 (7) buttonholes evenly spaced apart in left front border and for Girls in right front border, starting first buttonhole after ½ inch. (To make a buttonhole work across 2 sts., bind off 2 sts., work to end of row. On next row cast on 2 sts. over the 2 bound off sts. of previous row.)
FRONT:
With blue and No. 5 needles cast on 36 (38) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Incr. 3 sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Slip the 6 center front sts. to a holder to be worked later. Change to No. 8 needles and pattern. With 33 (35) sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back to underarm. Bind off at underarm edge 6 sts. and at the beg. of the next row at same edge 2 sts. (25 (27) sts. left.) Work even for 4 (4¼) inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 7 sts. at center edge and then always 2 sts. at neck edge until 16 (18) sits, are left over. Work as high as back and bind off for shoulder at armhole edge 8 (6) sts. twice (3 times). Work the other front to correspond.
SLEEVE:
Sew up shoulder seam. Right side facing you, pick up with blue and No. 8 needles 51 (55) sts. for sleeves. P back in blue. Change to pattern starting with red and work even for 2 inch. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 6th row until 33 (37) sts. are left. Work even until 7½ (8) inch. or any des. length to cuff. Change to No. 5 needles and decr. 3 sts. at even intervals across next row. With (blue work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Work the 2nd sleeve to correspond.
FINISHING:
Sew up side and sleeve seams. Slip border sts. from holder back to No. 5 needles and work with blue in ribbing K1, P1 until piece measures as long as front, working in rem. 5 (6) buttonholes. Bind off. Sew borders to fronts. Collar: Wrong side facing you pick up with blue and No. 5 needles 56 (60) sts. around the neck and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 4 rows. Change to stock. st. and keep the first and last 3 sts. on needle in garter st. for border and incr. 1 st. each end of needle every K row inside the border sts. until collar measures 2 inch. Change to garter st. and work 6 rows. Bind off. Sew buttons in place and block to size.

LEGGINGS:
Starting at top cast on with blue and No. 5 needles 64 (68) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 1 inch. Next row (beading): * K1, P1, y.o., P2 tog., repeat from * across row. Cont. in ribbing until piece measures 2 inch. Change to No. 8 needles and stock. st. and incr. 12 (14) sts. at even intervals across next row. Work even until the entire piece measures 7½ (8½) inch. or any des. length to crotch. Slip a marker at each end of needle and decr. 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row 7 (9) times. Work even until 10 (11) inch. from marker or 2½ inch. less than des. length to ankle. Work in pattern for 2½ inch. Change to No. 5 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch., decr. at even intervals across first row of ribbing to 40 (44) sts. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Make the 2nd half of legging the same way and sew up front and back seams to marker, then sew up each leg. With one strand each of blue, white and red and No. 6 crochet hook make a chain to des. length and pull through beading row. Block to size.

MITTENS:
With blue and No. 5 needles cast on 30 (34) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Change to No. 8 needles (incr. 1 st.) and work in pattern for 1 inch. K10 (12) sts. With different colored yarn K6 sts. Slip these sts. back to left hand needle and K across them again with mitten yarn. (These sts. are for thumb and are going to be worked later.) K across rem. 15 (17) sts., P1 row. Work in pattern for 2 inch. Work blue only. Decr. in next row: * K2, K2 tog., repeat from * across row. P1 row. Next row: * K1, K2 tog., repeat from * across row. P1 row. Next row: K2 tog. across row. Break yarn, leaving a 6 inch end. Thread a tapestry needle and run yarn through rem. sts. twice and pull sts. tog. Fasten off on wrong side. Thumb: (Work in blue only) Pull out extra thread and pick up with No. 8 sock needles 12 sts. Decr. in next round 4 (2) sts. and work even for ¾ (1) inch. K2 tog. across round. Finish as tip of mitten. Make 2nd mitten to correspond. Sew up side seam and block to size.

BOY'S CAP:
With blue and No. 5 needles cast on 84 (88) sts. and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Incr. 5 (5) sts. at even intervals across last row of ribbing. Change to No. 8 needles and pattern and work even for 4 (4½) inch. (For size 1 year decr. 1 st., for size 2 years decr. 5 sts. at even intervals across last row.) From now on work in blue only and decr. as follows: * K9, K2 tog., repeat from * across row. P1 row. * K8, K2 tog., repeat from * across row. P1 row. * K7, K2 tog., repeat from * across row. P1 row. Cont. to decr. 8 sts. every other row until 16 sts. are left on needle. Break yarn, leaving a 6 inch end, pull yarn through rem. sts. and fasten off tightly on wrong side. Sew up back seam. Make a pompon out of blue, red and white and sew to top of cap.
EARLAPS:
With blue and No. 5 needles pick up 16 (18) sts. at the inside of hat at the beg. of stock. st. part. Work in stock. st. for 1 (1½) inch. Decr. 1 st. at the beg. of each row until 2 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work 1 row s.c. around earlap. Pick up the other earlap on other side and work it to correspond. Ties: With No. 6 crochet hook make a chain out of 1 strand each blue, red and white and sew to end of each earlap. Block to size.

GIRL'S HAT:
With blue and No. 8 needles cast on 71 (75) sts. K1 row, P1 row. Change to pattern and work 18 rows. From now on work in blue only. Work 2 rows stock. st. Reverse stock. st. (working right side of hat on wrong side of cuff) and work even for 4½ (5) inch. Bind off 26 sts. at the beg. of the next 2 rows, on rem. 19 (23) sts. work even for 4½ inch. Decr. 1 st. at each end of every 3rd row twice. Bind off.
FINISHING:
Sew up back seams. Turn back cuff and crochet 2 rows s.c. around face side of hat, working first row through double thickness of yarn. Work 1 row s.c. along outer edge of cuff. Work 2 rows s.c. around bottom of hat, holding neckband slightly. Make ties as on boy's hat and sew to hat. Block to size.
