Measurements: Length from top of shoulder—23 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—21 inches.

Gauge: 5 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

Front. Starting at bottom, with main color and No. 5 needles cast on 90 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Break off. Change to No. 6 needles, attach contrasting color and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 1 inch, ending with a p row. Next row: K across, increasing 10 sts at equal intervals. Break off. Following row: Attach main color and p across. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 1, * k 2, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: P 1, * p 2, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: P 1, * k 2, p 2, then make a cable (to make a cable, slip off 3 sts on a stitch holder; keeping the stitch holder in back of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 sts on stitch holder), p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 6th row: Same as 2nd row. 7th to 10th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. These 10 rows constitute the pattern. Work over these 50 sts for 3 more rows, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on the 2nd row.

To Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row, at the same time dec. 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row until 24 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 6 sts every other row 4 times. Attach yarn at neck edge and work opposite side to correspond.

Back. Work exactly as for Front, omitting neck shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 8 rows. Bind off remaining sts.

Sleeves. Starting at armhole edge, with main color and No. 6 needles, cast on 30 sts and work in pattern casting on 2 sts at end of each row until there are 70 sts on needle. Work straight for 2½ inches. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 8th row thereafter until 48 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 16 inches, measuring along underarm seam. Change to No. 5 needles and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 inches. Bind off. Sew up right shoulder seam.
