Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 12 balls (1 oz. balls) of main color and 1 ball of a contrasting color.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 5 (4 mm. size), and 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size).
Measurements: Length from top of shoulder—23 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—21 inches.
Gauge: 5 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.
Front. Starting at bottom, with main color and No. 5 needles cast on 90 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3 inches. Break off. Change to No. 6 needles, attach contrasting color and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 1 inch, ending with a p row. Next row: K across, increasing 10 sts at equal intervals. Break off. Following row: Attach main color and p across. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 1, * k 2, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: P 1, * p 2, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: P 1, * k 2, p 2, then make a cable (to make a cable, slip off 3 sts on a stitch holder; keeping the stitch holder in back of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 sts on stitch holder), p 2, k 2. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 6th row: Same as 2nd row. 7th to 10th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. These 10 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 10 rows until piece measures 14½ inches. Next row: Work in pattern across 1st 50 sts, turn (thus starting neck shaping). Work over these 50 sts for 3 more rows, decreasing 1 st at neck edge on the 2nd row.
To Shape Armhole: Bind off 4 sts then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row, at the same time dec. 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row until 24 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 6 sts every other row 4 times. Attach yarn at neck edge and work opposite side to correspond.
Back. Work exactly as for Front, omitting neck shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 8 rows. Bind off remaining sts.
Sleeves. Starting at armhole edge, with main color and No. 6 needles, cast on 30 sts and work in pattern casting on 2 sts at end of each row until there are 70 sts on needle. Work straight for 2½ inches. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 8th row thereafter until 48 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 16 inches, measuring along underarm seam. Change to No. 5 needles and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 inches. Bind off. Sew up right shoulder seam.
Neck Band: Starting at left shoulder, with main color, No. 5 needles, and right side of work toward you, pick up 48 sts along left side of neck edge, 49 sts along right side, and 33 sts across back neck edge. Then work as follows: 1st row: K 2, (p 1, k 1) 39 times, p 2 tog., p 1, p 2 tog. (k 1, p 1) across, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: K 2, (p 1, k 1) 21 times, p 2 tog., k 1, p 2 tog., (k 1, p 1) across, ending row with k 1. 3rd row: K 2, (p 1, k 1) 38 times, p 2 tog., p 1, p 2 tog., (k 1, p 1) across, ending row with k 1. Continue decreasing in this manner at center front, for 2 more rows. Break off. Change to contrasting color and work as before for 4 more rows. Bind off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in.
