CARDIGAN—Back—With No. 1 steel needles cast on 126 sts. K. plain for 1¼ inches. Change to No. 3½ needles, work in Stockinette st. for 17 inches. Bind off 4 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows for underarm, then decrease 1 st. each side every other row 10 times. Work even until armholes measure 9 inches, bind off 6 sts. at the beginning of the next 10 rows (30 sts. for each shoulder), bind off remaining sts. for back of neck.
With No. 3½ needles work 2 backs for pockets as follows: Cast on 28 sts., work in Stockinette st. for 4 inches, ending with K. row. Slip sts. on stitch holder.
LEFT FRONT—With No. 1 steel needles cast on 74 sts., K. plain for 1¼ inches. Change to No. 3½ needles, K. 64 sts. Slip next 10 sts. on a thread (to be worked later for border). On the 64 sts. work in Stockinette st. for 4¼ inches.
On next K. row start pocket, K. 14 sts., bind off 28 sts., K. 22 sts. On next row P. the 28 sts. for pocket from stitch holder over the 28 sts. bound off. Continue in Stockinette st. until work measures same as back at underarm, bind off for armhole in same manner as back.
When front measures 22 inches from start, bind off 10 sts. at neck, then decrease 1 st. every other row at neck end 10 times, at same time when armhole measures 9 inches, bind off for slanting shoulder in same manner as back.
Work right front to correspond.
POCKET BANDS—With No. 1 steel needles pick up the 28 bound off sts. K. plain for 1¼ inches, bind off, sew sides to sweater. Sew shoulder seams.
NECK BAND—With No. 1 steel needles with right side of work toward you, pick up and K. 94 sts. around neck, K. 1 st., P. 1 st., for 10 rows, bind off.
LEFT FRONT BAND—Pick up the 10 border sts. on No. 1 steel needles and work in plain knitting. On next row, work buttonhole as follows: K. 3 sts., bind off 4 sts., K. 2 sts.
Next row cast on 4 sts. over those bound off.
Work 8 more buttonholes in this manner about every 2½ inches, having last buttonhole ½ inch from top. Work right front band to correspond omitting buttonholes. Sew bands to fronts.
SLEEVES—Pick up and K. 50 sts. across top of shoulder (25 sts. each side of shoulder seam), then pick up 3 sts. at the end of every row until all sts. are picked up (92 sts.). Work 2 inches even, then decrease 1 st. each side every inch 16 times (60 sts.). Change to No. 1 needles, K. 1 st., P. 1 st., (ribbing) for 4 inches, bind off.
Sew underarm seams, sew pockets to inside of sweater.
SLIP-OVER—With No. 1 needles work 2 backs for pockets as follows: Cast on 24 sts. K. 1 st., P. 1 st., for 4 inches, slip sts. on stitch holder.
FRONT—With No. 1 needles cast on 120 sts., K. 1 st., P. 1 st., (ribbing) for 5 inches. On next row work pockets as follows: K. 20, bind off 24, K. 32, bind off 24, K. 20. On next row P. 20, P. 24 sts. of first pocket off stitch holder, P. 32, P. 24 sts. of second pocket off stitch holder, P. 20. Change to No. 3½ needles, K. 1 row, P. 1 row, (Stockinette st.) for 10 inches to underarm. Bind off 5 sts. at the beginning of the next 2 rows.
On next purled row, K. 6 sts. each side and K. 2 sts. in center. Decrease 1 st. each side every other row 3 times by knitting the 7th and 8th st. together, (continue to knit 6 sts. on every purled row at each side, and 2 sts. more in center until there are 12 knitted sts. in center).
On next row start V neck, K. 52 sts., slip these sts. on a stitch holder and on remaining 52 sts. work right side of front, (always K. first and last 6 sts. on P. rows for borders). Decrease 1 st. every 4th row at neck end, by knitting the 7th and 8th st. together 16 times (36 sts. remaining).
Slip sts. on stitch holder and work left shoulder to correspond, ending on purled row. On next row cast on 30 sts. for back of neck, join to right shoulder (102 sts. on needle.)
On next row start slanting shoulders as follows: K. 77, turn, (leave remaining sts. on left hand needle), P. 5, K. 42, P. 5, turn, K. 57, turn, P. 10, K. 42, P. 10, turn, K. 67, turn, P. 15, K. 42, P. 15, turn, K. 77, turn, P. 20, K. 42, P. 20, turn, K. to end of row, turn, K. 6, P. 90, K. 6.
Work even for 6 inches. Continuing border at armholes, increase 1 st. at each side every other row 3 times, then cast on 2 sts. each side for underarm (112 sts.).
Work same length as front, changing to No. 1 needles for ribbing.
Sew underarm seams. Sew pockets to inside of sweater.
