MATERIALS:
CHADWICK'S RED HEART BABY POMPADOUR, 1 ball (1 oz. ball), for set.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
1½ yds. ribbon, ¼ inch wide.

GAUGE: (Stockinette Stitch) 6½ sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

MITTENS

CUFF … Cast on 48 sts and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: * K 1, O, k 2, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., k 2, O. Repeat from * across, ending with k 1, O, k 2, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., k 1, k twice in last st. 2nd and 4th rows: P across. 3rd row: * K 2, O, k 1, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., k 1, O, k 1. 5th row: * K 3, O, sl 1, k 2 tog., p.s.s.o., O, k 2. 6th row: P across. Repeat these 6 rows once more. Next row: K 1, * O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across, ending with k 1. Following row: Purl each st and each O across. The last 2 rows form eyelets for ribbon. Next row: Knit, decreasing 18 sts evenly across (30 sts remain). Now work in stockinette stitch (p 1 row, k 1 row) for 2½ inches.
   To shape top, work across 1st 15 sts, turn. Work over these 15 sts only, decreasing 1 st at end of each row until 7 sts remain. Bind off. Attach yarn where work was divided and work other half to correspond. Sew side and top edges together. Run ribbon through eyelets, and tie.

BOOTEES

CUFF … Cast on 48 sts and work in pattern as for cuff of mittens for 3 inches, ending with 6th row of pattern. Work eyelets as before. Next row: Knit, decreasing 12 sts evenly across (36 sts). Following row: P across. Work is now done in stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row). On next row, work across 22 sts, turn and work back across 8 sts. Work over these 8 sts only for 2 inches. Bind off (this is toe piece). With right side facing, slip the 14 sts of right-hand needle onto left-hand needle. Attach yarn and k across 14 sts, pick up 36 sts evenly around edges of toe piece, k across remaining 14 sts (64 sts on needle). Work straight for 1 inch. With right side facing, k 28, k 3 tog., k 2, k 3 tog., k 28. Following row: P across. Next row: K 26, k 3 tog., k 2, k 3 tog., k 26. Following row: P across. Continue thus, decreasing 4 sts every other row until 48 sts remain. Bind off on next row. Sew sole and back in one continuous seam. Run ribbon through eyelets, and tie.
