MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 2 balls (¾ oz. balls) … Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).

GAUGE: (Garter st) 7 sts make 1 inch; 14 rows make 1 inch.

BONNET

Starting at edge of cuff, cast on 152 sts. 1st and 2nd rows: K across. 3rd row: (Wrong side of cuff) K 8, * p 4, k 8. Repeat from * across. 4th row: K 3, * k 2 tog, k 10. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 3 (139 sts). 5th row: K 7, * p 4, k 7. Repeat from * across. 6th row: K 3, * k 2 tog, k 9. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 2 (126 sts). 7th row: K 6, * p 4, k 6. Repeat from * across. 8th row: K 2, * k 2 tog, k 8. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 2 (113 sts). 9th row: K 5, * p 4, k 5. Repeat from * across. 10th row: K 2, * k 2 tog, k 7. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 1 (100 sts). 11th row: K 4, * p 4, k 4. Re­peat from * across. Continue thus, de­creasing 13 sts on every even row until 61 sts remain. Next row: K 1,* p 4, k 1. Repeat from * across. Work 6 rows of stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row). This completes cuff; work bon­net as follows: 1st row: * K 4, k twice in next st. Repeat from * across, end­ing with k 1 (73 sts). Work 7 rows in garter st (k each row). 9th row: * K 5, k twice in next st. Repeat from * across, ending with k 7 (84 sts). Work straight in garter st until piece meas­ures 4 inches from last row of cuff.

To Shape Top: 1st row: With wrong side of cuff facing, k 3, * k 2 tog, k 10. Repeat from * across, ending with k 7 (77 sts). 2nd row: * P 4, k 7. Repeat from * across. 3rd row: K 3, * k 2 tog, k 9. Repeat from * across, ending with k 6 (70 sts). 4th row: * P 4, k 6. Repeat from * across. Continue thus, decreasing 7 sts on every odd row until 42 sts remain. Next row: * P 4, k 2. Repeat from * across. Following row: * K 2 tog, k 1. Repeat from * across (28 sts). Next row: * P 3, k 1. Repeat from * across. Following row: * K 1, k 3 tog. Repeat from * across (14 sts). Break off, leav­ing a 12-inch length of yarn. Thread a needle with this length and slip re­maining sts onto it. Draw together tightly and fasten securely on wrong side. Starting at top, sew edges together for 4 inches. Work a row of sc along lower edge of Bonnet and cuff. Turn back cuff and sew in place. Using double yarn, make two 10-inch chains for ties. Sew ties in place.

TASSEL (Make 2)…Cut a piece of cardboard 2 inches wide and 3 inches long. Lay a 6-inch strand along length of cardboard. Wind yarn 25 times around width of cardboard. Break yarn. Tie ends of 6-inch strand and slip tassel off cardboard. Wind yarn several times around strands close to top. Cut loops at bottom and trim to 1-inch length. Fasten a tassel to end of each tie.

MITTENS

Starting at edge of cuff, cast on 60 sts. 1st and 2nd rows: K across. 3rd row: K 4, (p 4, k 8) 4 times; p 4, k 4. 4th row: K 1, k 2 tog, k 8, (k 2 tog, k 10) 3 times; k 2 tog, k 8. k 2 tog, k 1 (54 sts). 5th row: K 3, (p 4, k 7) 4 times; p 4, k 3. 6th row: K 1, k 2 tog, k 7, (k 2 tog, k 9) 3 times; k 2 tog, k 6, k 2 tog, k 1 (48 sts). 7th row: K 2, (p 4, k 6) 4 times; p 4, k 2. 8th row: K 2 tog, k 6, (k 2 tog, k 8) 3 times; k 2 tog, k 6, k 2 tog (42 sts). 9th row: K 1, (p 4, k 5) 4 times; p 4, k 1. 10th row: K 2 tog, k 5, (k 2 tog, k 7) 3 times; k 2 tog, k 4, k 2 tog (36 sts). 11th row: P 4, (k 4, p 4) 4 times. 12th row: K 5, (k 2 tog, k 6) 3 times; k 2 tog, k 5 (32 sts). 13th row: P 4, (k 3, p 4) 4 times. 14th row: K 4, (k 2 tog, k 5) 4 times (28 sts). 15th row: P 4, (k 2, p 4) 4 times. 16th row: K 4, (k 2 tog, k 4) 4 times (24 sts). 17th row: P 4, (k 1, p 4) 4 times. 18th row: * K 2, O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across. This completes cuff; work hand as follows: 1st row: * K 2, k twice in next st. Repeat from * across (32 sts). Work 3 rows in garter st. 5th row: * K 3, k twice in next st. Repeat from * across (40 sts). Work straight in garter st until piece meas­ures 2½ inches from last row of cuff.

To Shape Tip: 1st row: With wrong side facing, * p 4, k 6. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: K 2, (k 2 tog, k 8) 3 times; k 2 tog, k 6 (36 sts). 3rd row: * P 4, k 5. Repeat from * across. 4th row: K 2, (k 2 tog, k 7) 3 times; k 2 tog, k 5 (32 sts). 5th row: * P 4, k 4. Repeat from * across. Continue thus, decreasing 4 sts on every even row until 24 sts remain. Next row: * P 4, k 2. Repeat from * across. Fol­lowing row: * K 2 tog, k 1. Repeat from * across (16 sts). Next row: * P 3, k 1. Repeat from * across. Fol­lowing row: * K 1, k 3 tog. Repeat from * across (8 sts). Finish same as top of Bonnet. Sew side seam. With double yarn, make a 16-inch chain and run through eyelets at wrist. Make 2 tassels same as on Bonnet and fasten to ends of chain. Make other mitten same as this.
