MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 2 balls (¾ oz. balls) … Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) … 1 yard of ribbon, ½ inch wide … 1 yard of ribbon, ¼ inch wide.
GAUGE: (Stockinette st) 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
BONNET
Starting at front edge, cast on 86 sts and work 8 rows of stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row). Now work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 1, * O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across, ending with k 2 tog, k 1 (86 sts). 2nd row: K 1, * p and k in next st. Repeat from * across to last st, k 1 (170 sts). 3rd to 7th rows incl: * With yarn in front of work, sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. 8th row: K 1, p 2 tog across to last st, k 1 (86 sts). Repeat 1st to 8th rows incl 4 more times; then repeat 1st row once more. Next row: P across. Shape top as follows: 1st row: K 5, * k 2 tog, k 7. Repeat from * across (77 sts). 2nd to 6th rows incl: P 1 row, k 1 row alternately. 7th row: K 5, * k 2 tog, k 6. Repeat from * across (68 sts). 8th to 12th rows incl: Same as 2nd to 6th rows incl. 13th row: K 5, * k 2 tog, k 5. Repeat from * across (59 sts). 14th, 15th and 16th rows: P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row. 17th row: K 5, * k 2 tog, k 4. Repeat from * across (50 sts). 18th, 19th and 20th rows: Same as 14th, 15th and 16th rows. 21st row: * K 3, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (40 sts). 22nd row: P across. 23rd row: * K 2, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (30 sts). 24th row: P across. 25th row: * K 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (20 sts). 26th row: P 2 tog across (10 sts). Break yarn, leaving a 12-inch length. Thread a needle with this length and slip remaining sts onto it. Draw together tightly and darn in on wrong side. Sew back seam to last row of pattern. Turn under cast-on sts and whip to 1st row of pattern. Work a row of sc along lower edge of Bonnet. Cut ½-inch ribbon in half. Fold one end of one piece into 4 small loops and fasten to side of Bonnet. Finish other side in same way. Press through damp cloth.
MITTENS
Starting at edge of cuff, cast on 46 sts. Work same as Bonnet until 3 complete patterns have been made. Then repeat 1st row once more (4 rows of holes). Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 inch. Next row: With right side facing, k across. Following row: P across.
To Shape Thumb Gore: 1st row: K 17, k twice in next st, k 1, k twice in next st, k 26. 2nd and all even rows: P across. 3rd row: K 17, k twice in next st, k 3, k twice in next st, k 26. Continue thus, increasing 2 sts (as described) on every k row until there are 58 sts ending with a p row. Next row: K 18, slip next 14 sts onto a safety pin for thumb, cast on 4 sts, k across remaining 26 sts (48 sts). Work in stockinette st for 1 inch, ending with a p row.
To Shape Tip: 1st row: * K 4, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (40 sts). 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: P 1 row, k 1 row, p 1 row. 5th row: * K 3, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (32 sts). Work 3 rows straight. Continue thus, decreasing 8 sts evenly on every 4th row until 16 sts remain. Next row: P across. Following row: K 2 tog across (8 sts). Break yarn and finish tip same as Bonnet. Sew side seam. Turn up hem and whip in place.
THUMB … Cast on 3 sts, k the 14 sts from safety pin. Work straight for ½ inch. Next row: * K 3, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across. Work 3 rows straight. Following row: * K 2, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across. Next row: P across. Following row: * K 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across. Break yarn and finish tip same as Bonnet. Sew thumb seam and sew back of thumb in place. Cut ¼-inch ribbon in half and run through ribbing at wrist. Press through damp cloth. Make other mitten to correspond, reversing position of thumb.
