REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 2-ounces of Knitting Worsted.
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #3 Single Pointed.

RIGHT MITTEN: Starting at the cuff with the #3 needles cast on 32 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2¼ inches. Then start the pattern as follows:
1st row – K 2, p 1, k 4, p 1, k 4, p 1, k to the end.
2nd row – P 19 sts, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 2.
3rd row – K 2, p 1, slip the next 2 sts onto a dble. pt. needle and hold in the back of the work; knit the next 2 sts; knit the 2 sts off the dble. pt. needle (cable); p 1, cable again; p 1, k to end of row.
4th row – Repeat row 2. (Cable on the 5th row hereafter until the tip decreases).
Next row: THUMB INCREASE: Work over 15 sts in the pattern; inc. 1 st in next st; k 1; inc. in next st; k to end. NEXT ROW and every other row – Work over the sts as they are.
2nd inc: Work 15 sts in the pattern; inc. in next st; k 3; inc. in next st; k to end.
3rd inc: Work over 15 sts in the pattern; inc. in next st; k 5; inc. in next st; k to end. Work back on next row as the sts are. Work 2 rows even.

THUMB SEPARATION: Work over 15 sts in the pattern, place onto a stitch holder; k 9 sts, leave on the needle. Place the remaining sts on 2nd st holder. Cast on 1 st at the end of the 9 sts; turn and purl back, cast on 1 st. Work on these 11 sts in stockinette stitch for 1¼ inches.

NEXT KNIT ROW – K 2 sts together across the row. Break the yarn, leaving 6 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw tightly thru the remaining sts and fasten on the wrong side. Sew up the thumb.
Take the sts from the 1st st holder and put back onto the needle; tie yarn in the first st; pick up and knit 4 sts along the thumb; k the sts from the 2nd st holder. Work back and forth on these sts in the pattern until the mitten measures 3 inches from the ribbing.

TIP DECREASES: 1st dec: * K 4 sts; k 2 sts tog; repeat from * across row ending with k 4. Purl back across row.
2nd dec: * K 3 sts; k 2 sts tog; repeat from * across row. Purl back across row.
3rd dec: * K 2 sts; k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog. Purl across next row.
4th dec: * K 1 st; k 2 sts tog; repeat from * across.
Purl 2 sts together across the next row. Break the yarn leaving 10 inches. Finish as the tip of the thumb. Sew up the side of the mitten.

LEFT MITTEN: Work the cuff the same way, when starting the pattern:
1st row – K 19 sts; p 1, k 4, p 1, k 4, p 1, k 2.
2nd row – P 2, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 4, k 1, p 19.

THUMB INCREASES: Work 14 sts; inc. in next st; k 1; inc. in next st; finish the row in the sts as they are. Finish to correspond.
