Size 34

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Sports Yarn, 4 balls (1 oz. balls) of main color, 3 balls of a light contrasting color referred to as A and 2 balls of a dark contrasting color referred to as B.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).

Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch, 9 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom with No. 2 needles and color A, cast on 102 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 8 rows. Break off, attach main color and continue as before for 2 rows. Break off, attach color B and work 8 rows. Break off, attach main color and work 2 rows. Break off, attach color A and work 8 rows. Break off. Then change to No. 4 needles and, with main color, work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 4 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every inch thereafter until there are 112 sts on needle but, when piece measures 6½ inches, work horizontal stripes in stockinette st, exactly as for border. (Piece should now measure about 9½ inches.) Break off. Attach main color and work straight until piece measures 10 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 90 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Break off main color. Work another set of horizontal stripes same as before. (Piece should now measure 6½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping.) Break off. Attach main color and work straight until armhole measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Next row: Bind off 3 sts, work across next 30 sts, bind off next 18 sts, thus starting neck shaping, continue across next 33 sts. Hereafter, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until all sts have been bound off. Attach yarn at neck edge on opposite side and work to correspond.

Neck Band. Having right side of work toward you, with No. 2 needles and color A pick up 62 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 4 rows. Break off, attach main color and work 2 rows. Break off, attach color B and work 4 rows. Break off, attach main color and work 2 rows. Break off. Attach color A and work 4 rows. Bind off loosely.

Front. Starting at bottom with No. 2 needles and color A, cast on 114 sts and work exactly as for Back until there are 124 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 2 sts at end of each row until 90 sts remain. Work remainder of Front exactly as for Back.

Neck Band. Work exactly as for neck band of Back, but picking up 68 sts instead of 62.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom with No. 2 needles and color A, cast on 64 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 4 rows. Break off, attach main color and continue as before for 2 rows. Break off, attach color B and work 4 rows. Break off, attach main color and work 2 rows. Break off, attach color A and work 4 rows. Break off. Then change to No. 4 needles and, with main color, work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at the end of each row until 80 sts are on needle. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 54 sts remain. Break off, attach color A and work horizontal stripes as for Back, decreasing 1 st at beginning and end of each row until 12 sts remain. Break off, attach main color and continue as before until 8 sts remain. Bind off.

Sew up shoulder and underarm seams, being careful to match horizontal stripes. Sew up sleeves and sew sleeves in, having stripes correspond with stripes of Front and Back.
