Ribbed Calot Pattern #2272

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown Zephyr, 2 balls (1 oz. balls). If 30-yd. balls are used, buy three times the amount specified.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2.

Gauge: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at lower edge of crown, cast on 104 sts and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 2 inches. Then work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, until piece measures 6 inches in all. Next row: With right side of stockinette st (right side of work) toward you, * k 2, p 2 tog. Repeat from * across. Following row: K 1, p 2 alternately across. Next row: * K 2, p 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat these last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 7 inches. Next row: With right side of work toward you, * k 2 tog., p 1. Repeat from * across. Following row: K 1, p 1 alternately across. Next row: K 1, p 1 alternately across. Repeat these last 2 rows until piece measures 8 inches. Next row: * Sl 1, p 1, p.s.s.o. Repeat from * across. Next row: P 2 tog. across. Bind off remaining sts tightly. Sew both ends together. Sew top opening together. To trim crown, with crochet hook make a chain 8 inches long, turn. Sl st in each st across. Break off. Fold chain, making 2 loops (each 1½ inches long). Wind remainder of chain around loops half way to the top. Fasten. Sew trimming to top of hat. Roll the 2 inches of stockinette on right side.
