BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 117 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches, increasing 10 sts at equal distances apart on last row (127 sts). Change to No. 3 needles and work as follows: 1st row: * (P 1, k 1) twice, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 5. Repeat from * 4 more times, (p 1, k 1) twice, k 9, (p 1, k 1) twice. 2nd row: * (K 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 5. Repeat from * 4 more times, (k 1, p 1) twice, p 9, (k l, p 1) twice. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 5th row: * (P 1, k 1) twice; then make a braid st (to make a braid st, slip next 3 sts onto the extra, double-pointed needle, and hold in back of work; k next 3 sts, bring sts on extra needle to front of work, k next 3 sts, then k the sts on extra needle); (p 1, k 1) twice, k 5. Repeat from * 4 more times, (p 1, k 1) twice, make a braid st, (p 1, k 1) twice. 6th to 16th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 1st rows alternately. The last 12 rows (5th to 16th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 12½ inches in all.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 97 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 8 sts at beginning of each row until 33 sts remain. Bind off.

FRONT. Work as for Back until piece measures 5 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 42 sts, bind off next 13 sts (thus starting neck shaping), work across remaining 42 sts. Hereafter work over these last 42 sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row 10 times; at the same time, when piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 8 sts at armhole edge every other row 4 times. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge, and work to correspond.

SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 83 sts and work in ribbing for 1 inch. Change to No. 3 needles and work in pattern as for Back for 1 inch. Then increase 1st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 89 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 5 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 9 sts remain. Bind off.

Sew up one shoulder seam. Holding right side of work toward you, with No. 1 needles pick up 102 sts all around neck edge, and work in ribbing for ¾ inch. Bind off loosely. Sew up other shoulder seam. Sew up underarm seams. Sew up sleeve seams, and sew sleeves in.
