MEASUREMENTS AFTER BLOCKING: Bust—36 inches. Length from top of shoulder—22 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—18 inches.

GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.

BACK. Starting at bottom, with No. 5 needles cast on 120 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 6 rows. 7th row: K 2, * (k 3 sts tog. but, before slipping the sts off left-hand needle, k the 1st and 2nd sts once more; then sl the 3rd st off left-hand needle; k 1) 3 times, p 2, k 1. Repeat from * across, ending with (k 3 tog., k 1st and 2nd sts once more, sl 3rd st off, k 1) 3 times, k 1. 8th row: * K 1, (p 3, sl 1) 3 times, p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. 9th row: K 4, (k 3 tog., k 1st and 2nd sts once more, sl 3rd st off, k 1) twice, k 2, p 1, * p 1, k 3, (k 3 tog., k 1st and 2nd sts once more, sl 3rd st off, k 1) twice, k 2, p 1. Repeat from * across, ending with (k 3 tog., k 1st and 2nd sts once more, sl 3rd st off, k 1) twice, k 3. 10th row: * K 1, p 2, (p 3, sl 1) twice, p 3, k 1. Repeat from * across. The last 4 rows (7th to 10th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 4½ inches in all. Then, continuing in pattern, inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 144 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 13 inches in all.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 112 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 68 sts remain. On next row, bind off 4 sts, work in pattern across next 16 sts, bind off 32 sts, (thus starting neck shaping), and continue in pattern across remaining 16 sts. Continuing with shoulder shaping, bind off 2 sts at neck edge each row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge, and work to correspond.

NECK BAND. Holding right side of work toward you, with No. 3 needles pick up 62 sts all around neck edge, and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 inch. Bind off.

FRONT. Work as for Back until piece measures 4½ inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are 148 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 13 inches.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: Bind off 8 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 104 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 44 sts, bind off 16 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue in pattern across next 44 sts. Hereafter work over the last 44 sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row all the way up to shoulder and, at the same time, when piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 8 sts at armhole edge every other row until all stitches are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge, and work to correspond.

NECK BAND. Work exactly as for back neck band, but pick up 76 sts instead of 62 sts.

SLEEVES. Starting at bottom, with No. 3 needles cast on 60 sts and work in ribbing for 2½ inches. Change to No. 5 needles and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 102 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 18 inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 58 sts remain. Now bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 18 sts remain. Bind off. Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams, and sew sleeves in.
