AFGHAN No. 699-A

Approximately 48 x 66 Inches

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Afghan Wool, 27 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of White, 5 skeins Dusty Pink, 5 skeins Lilac, 4 skeins Mauve and 3 skeins Tapestry Green.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size).
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 1/0.
Quilted satin for lining.

Strips are knitted entirely in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), changing colors as indicated on chart and always twisting colors on wrong side of work. Each square on chart equals 1 stitch.

Gauge: 6 sts make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.

FIRST STRIP … With White cast on 49 sts and p across. 1st row: K 23 with White; attach Tapestry Green and k 3; k 23 with White. 2nd row: P 20 White, p 1 Green, p 1 White, p 5 Green, p 1 White, p 1 Green, p 20 White. 3rd row: K 21 White, k 2 Green, k 1 White, k 1 Green, k 1 White, k 2 Green, k 21 White. 4th row: P 21 White, p 1 Green, p 2 White, p 1 Green, p 2 White, p 1 Green, p 21 White. Break off Green. 5th row: K 20 White, attach Dusty Pink and k 1, k 2 White, k 3 Pink, k 2 White, k 1 Pink, k 20 White. 6th row: P 19 White, p 2 Pink, p 1 White, p 5 Pink, p 1 White, p 2 Pink, p 19 White. 7th row: K 18 White, k 4 Pink, k 1 White, k 3 Pink, k 1 White, k 4 Pink, k 18 White. 8th row: P 14 White, attach Lilac and p 1, p 3 White, p 13 Pink, p 3 White, p 1 Lilac, p 14 White. 9th row: K 13 White, k 2 Lilac, k 4 White, k 4 Pink; attach Green and k 3, k 4 Pink, k 4 White, k 2 Lilac, k 13 White. Starting at 10th row from bottom, follow chart to top. Then repeat entire chart 6 more times. Bind off. Block strip to measure 8 x 61 inches. With Mauve work a row of s c along right side of one long edge, keeping work flat. Fasten off. With Lilac, work s c in back loop of each Mauve s c. Fasten off. Finish other long edge in same way. Make 2 more strips same as this.

SECOND STRIP … With White cast on 49 sts and p across. Work as for first strip, starting at 27th row from bottom and follow chart to top. Then repeat entire chart 6 more times. Now work from 1st to 26th rows incl. Bind off. Block and finish long edges exactly as for first strip. Make another strip same as this.
   With Lilac join first and second strips alternately, using overhand sewing and catching 1 loop of Lilac s c on each strip. Work Mauve and Lilac s c along remaining edges.

FRINGE … Cut a cardboard strip 4 inches wide and 5 inches long. With right side of work toward you, attach White, insert crochet hook, yarn over and draw out a loop, place loop over width of cardboard; insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw out a loop, place over cardboard as before. Continue in this manner until cardboard is covered with loops. Do not break off but, with a second ball of White, make a chain along top edge of cardboard, making a st in top of each loop. Drop 2nd strand of yarn when all loops have been fastened, slip out cardboard, pick up 1st strand of yarn and continue to make loops as before. Continue thus until loops are made all around edges of Afghan. Break off both strands. Fold the row of loops in half and whip down the chain-edge to wrong side with sewing thread. Line Afghan with quilted satin.

BOUDOIR PILLOW No. 699-B

MATERIALS: Chadwick’s Red Heart Afghan Wool, 2 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of White, and 1 skein each of Tapestry Green, Dusty Pink, Mauve and Lilac.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size).
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 1 /0.
A satin-covered pillow, 12 inches square.

With White cast on 61 sts (6 sts more to be worked in White on either side of chart). Work as for first strip of Afghan up to and including 39th row. Then work from the 26th row back to the 1st row incl. (thus reversing part of design). Bind off. Work Mauve and Lilac s c all around edges. Block to measure 12 x 12 inches. Work fringe all around as for Afghan, using a cardboard 2 x 5 inches. Sew to top of pillow, having fringe extend beyond edges.
