Knitted Snow Suit Pattern #5318

Sizes 2 and 4

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED, ARTICLE W11
15—1 oz. Skeins Red or any Color desired.
4—1 oz. Skeins White.
1 yd. ½ inch Ribbon.
8 Small Buttons.
1 pair each Bone Knitting Needles No. 3 and No. 4.
1 Bone Crochet Hook No. 2.

GAUGE. 6 sts = 1 inch. 8 rows = 1 inch.
Directions are given for size 2, size 4 is given in brackets.

Sweater Back. With Red, on No. 3 needles, cast on 72 (78) sts, and working in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for 1½ inches, (1¾ inches). Change to No. 4 needles and work in stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) for 6 rows, break yarn. Attach White and K 1 row.
2nd Row. * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row.
3rd Row. * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row. (The last 2 rows form seed st pattern which will be referred to later.)
4th Row. Same as 2nd row, break yarn.
Attach Red and work 14 rows in stockinette st.
These 18 rows are repeated for pattern for the entire back and front of Sweater only.
Work even until back measures 8½ (9) inches from beginning.
Next 2 Rows. Bind off 3 (3) sts at the beginning of each row, then decrease 1 st each side every other row until 60 (66) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures 4¼ (4¾) inches from the 1st decreasing point.
Next 6 Rows. Bind off 6 (7) sts at the beginning of each row and bind off remaining sts for back of neck.
LEFT FRONT. With Red, on No. 3 needles, cast on 36 (40) sts, work in pattern same as back to underarm ending with a Purl row.
Next Row. Bind off 3 (3) sts for underarm, then decrease one st at armhole edge every other row until 30 (34) sts remain. Work even until front measures 3 (3½) inches from 1st decreasing point ending at neck edge.
Next Row. Start shaping neck. Bind off 8 (8) sts, then decrease one st at neck edge every other row 4 (5) times. Work even until armhole measures 4¼ (4¾) inches from 1st decreasing point ending at armhole edge. Bind off 6 (7) sts every other row 3 times, bind off remaining sts. Work other front to correspond reversing all shaping.
SLEEVE. With Red, on No. 3 needles, cast on 44 (44) sts and work in ribbing for 2 inches. Change to No. 4 needles and work in stockinette st increasing 1 st each side every 8th row until there are 56 (60) sts on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 10 (10½) inches from beginning or length desired.
Next 2 Rows. Bind off 3 (3) sts at the beginning of each row, then decrease one st each side every row until 20 (22) sts remain, bind off remaining sts. Work other sleeve to correspond.
FINISHING. Attach yarn at neck edge of left front and work 72 s c down front, ch 1, turn and work 4 more rows of s c, break yarn. Attach yarn at lower edge of right front and work 72 s c up front, ch 1, turn and work 1 more row of s c, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, * ch 2 for buttonhole, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c, repeat from * 4 times, ch 3, skip 2 s c, 1 s c in each of the 2 remaining s c, ch 1, turn and work 1 s c in each s c working 1 s c in each st of ch of buttonhole. Work 1 more row of s c, break yarn.
Press each piece, sew seams and sew in sleeves. Sew buttons in position.
NECK BAND. With Red, on No. 3 needles, pick up and K 76 sts, work in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for ¾ inch, bind off.
LEGGINGS. With Red, beginning at lower edge, on No. 3 needles, cast on 44 (48) sts and work in ribbing for 1¾ inches.
Next Row. K across row increasing 1 st in every other st, 66 (72) sts. Change to No. 4 needles and Purl 1 row, then continue even in stockinette st for 4 (6) inches.
Next Row. * Increase one st each side, then work 3 rows even.
Repeat from * 9 (11) times.
Next 2 Rows. Cast on 3 sts at the beginning of each row, then work 3 (5) rows even.
Next Row. * Decrease 1 st each side, then work 4 rows even. Repeat from * until 12 decreases have been made, then work 4 rows even ending with a Purl row.
Start Shaping Back. K across 33 sts (36) turn. Sl 1 st and Purl to end of row. K 25 (28) sts, turn. Sl 1 st and Purl to end of row. K 17 (20) sts, turn. Sl 1 st and Purl to end of row. K 9 (12) sts, turn. Sl 1 st and Purl to end of row. K across all sts. Purl 1 row.
Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for 1½ inches, bind off in ribbing. Work other leg to correspond to the shaping of back ending with a K row.
Shape Back. Purl across 33 (36) sts, turn. Sl 1 st and K to end of row. Purl across 25 (28) sts, turn. Sl 1 st and K to end of row. Purl across 17 (20) sts, turn. Sl 1 st and K to end of row. Purl across 9 sts, turn. Sl 1 st and K to end of row. Purl across all sts, K 1 row.
Change to No. 3 needles and work in ribbing for 1½ inches, bind off. Press each piece. Sew leg seams. Sew back of leggings with seams meeting at crotch and continue seam up front of leggings.
Straps. Cast on 5 sts, * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat the first row until work measures 15 inches or length desired.
Face with ribbon and sew in position.
HOOD. With Red, starting at neck edge, on No. 4 needles, cast on 34 (38) sts and work in pattern same as sweater increasing 1 st at beginning of every 4th row until there are 39 (43) sts on needle, then increase 1 st at beginning of every 3rd row until 53 (57) sts remain ending with a Purl row.
Next Row. Start shaping back of hood. K the 1st 43 (44) sts, turn. Sl the 1st st, Purl across row increasing 1 st at beginning of row, 54 (58) sts. K the 1st 30 (31) sts, turn. Sl the 1st st, Purl across row. K 16 (17) sts, turn. Sl the 1st st. Purl across row. K 6 (7) sts, turn. Sl the 1st st. Purl across row. K 1 row. Bind off. Work other section in same manner reversing all shaping.
FINISHING. Press each piece, sew seams at back and top of hood together. With White, on No. 3 needle, pick up and K 64 sts around neck edge. Work 6 rows in Seed st, bind off.
With White, on No. 3 needles, with wrong side of hood toward you, pick up and K 114 sts at front edge for band. Work 11 rows in Seed st, bind off. Fold front band in half, roll back and tack in position.
CHIN STRAP. With White, on No. 3 needles, cast on 3 sts, K 1, P 1, K 1.
2nd Row. Increase 1 st at the beginning and end of row.
3rd Row. K 1, P 1, repeat from beginning across row. Repeat 3rd row until work measures 3 inches from beginning.
Next Row. Decrease 1 st at the beginning and end of row, bind off, break yarn leaving an end long enough to ch 6, sl st in 1st bound off st for button hole. Sew strap and buttons in position.
MITTENS. With White, on No. 3 needles, cast on 40 (44) sts, work in ribbing for 3 inches.
Next Row. Change to No. 4 needles, K 12 (14), increase 1 s c in next st, K 14, increase 1 st in next st, K to end of row, 42 (46) sts on needle.
Work even in stockinette st for 9 (11) rows ending with a Purl row.
Next Row. K 12 (14) slip sts on a thread for thumb.
On remaining sts work 2 (4) more rows ending with a Purl row, break yarn.
Attach Red and K 1 row. Work next 3 rows in Seed st, break yarn.
Attach White and work 10 (12) rows in stockinette st ending with a Purl row.
Next Row. Start decreasing, * K 4, K 2 together, repeat from * to end of row. Purl 1 row.
3rd Row. * K 3, K 2 together, repeat from * to end of row. Purl 1 row.
5th Row. * K 2, K 2 together, repeat from * to end of row. Purl 1 row.
7th Row. K 2 together across row, then Purl 1 row, break yarn leaving an end long enough for sewing. Thread into a large needle and draw through remaining sts twice, leave end for sewing after thumb is completed. Slip the thumb sts on needle and work 7 (9) rows in stockinette st.
Next Row. * K 4, K 2 together repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row.
Next Row. * K 3, K 2 together, repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row.
Next Row. * K 2, K 2 together, repeat from * across row. Purl 1 row, break yarn leaving an end. Thread into a needle, draw through remaining sts twice, tighten yarn and sew thumb together, then sew remainder of mitten together. Work another mitten to correspond working to within the last 12 sts and continue in same manner as 1st mitten.

Knitted Boy's Cap

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED, ARTICLE W11
2—1 oz. Skeins White.
1 Pair Knitting Needles No. 5.
2 Small Pearl Buttons.

On No. 5 needles, cast on 88 sts.
1st Row. * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row.
2nd Row. * K 1, P 1, repeat from * across row.
Repeat the above 2 rows until pattern section measures 2 inches from beginning. Change to stockinette st. (K 1 row, P 1 row).
Next Row. Start shaping cap. * K 20, K 2 tog, repeat from * 3 times, P 1 row, K 1 row, P 1 row. Repeat from beginning, having 1 st less between each decreasing point, continue until 76 sts remain on needles, then decrease in same manner every 2nd row until 48 sts remain ending with a P row.
Next Row. K 2 tog across row. P 1 row.
Next Row. * K 1, K 2 together, repeat from * across row. P 1 row, break yarn, leaving an end long enough for sewing, thread into needle, slip remaining sts on yarn, draw together and fasten firmly.
With right side of work toward you and starting at back seam pick up and K 28 sts, change to pattern, at the beginning of the 4th row, decrease 1 st, repeat decreases every 4th row twice. When band measures 1½ inches, ending at back seam, bind off 20 sts, on remaining 5 sts work pattern for 2¾ inches (chin strap), bind off, leaving an end long enough to crochet chain 5, and attach at other end of row for loop for button. Work opposite side in same manner reversing decreases and chin strap. On front of cap pick up and K 36 sts, work 3 rows of pattern. Next row decrease 1 st at each end of row, repeat decreases every 4th row twice, when band measures inches, bind off. Block cap. Sew back seam and sew buttons in position.
