REQUIREMENTS:
YARN: 12-ounces Knitting Worsted
NEEDLES: 1-pr. size 4. 1-pr. size 9.
7 buttons

GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH:
Row 1: * p 2, k 3, repeat from * across row.
Row 2: * k 2, p 3, repeat from * across row.
Row 3: * p 2, sl 1, k 2, PSSO the k 2, repeat from * across row.
Row 4: * k 2, p 1, YO, p 1, repeat from * across row.
Row 5: * p 2, k 3, repeat from * across row.
Row 6: * k 2, p 3, repeat from * across row.
Row 7: Repeat row 1.
Row 8: * k 2, p 1, pick up 1 st in back of work, p 1, repeat from * across row.
These 8 rows form the pattern.

BACK: With size 4 needles cast on 72 st and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 in. Change to size 9 needles and work the first 2 rows of pattern st until piece measures 11 in. from beg.

SHAPE ARMHOLES: Cast off 3 st at the beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each end of work every other row 2 times. Work 1 set of pattern on the next 8 rows then continue to work rows 1 and 2 until work measures 6 inches from beg of armhole shaping. Cast off 4 st at beg of next 10 rows. Place remaining st on a holder for back of neck.

RIGHT FRONT: With size 4 needles cast on 42 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, keeping first 5 sts in seed st and forming first buttonhole when work measures ½ in. To make buttonhole work over first 2 st cast off 1st continue to end of row. On return row cast on 1 st over cast off st. Make 6 more buttonholes evenly spaced to neck. When ribbing measures same as back change to size 9 needles and work rows 1 and 2 of pattern for 1 in. On the next row work over 17 sts from front edge and work next 13 st in ribbing. Continue in pattern to end of row. Work ribbing on these 13 st for one inch for pocket. On next row cast off these 13 st and on return row cast on 13 sts over those cast off. Continue in pattern until work measures same as back to armhole. To shape arm- hole cast off 3 st once at underarm edge and dec 1 st at same edge every other row 2 times. On next row start a set of pattern working 8 rows as on back. Continue to work row 1 and 2 of pattern until piece measures 5 in. from beg of armhole shaping.

SHAPE NECK: Cast off 8 st at neck edge once and dec 2 sts at same edge every other row until there are 20 sts on the needle. Work straight until work measures same as back to shoulder. Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 5 rows.

LEFT FRONT: Work same as right front reversing all shaping and omit buttonholes.

POCKETS: Pick up 13 sts along cast on edge of opening and work in stockinette st for 6 in. Cast off. Fold pocket up and sew along sides. Sew edge to cast off sts.

SLEEVES: With size 4 needles cast on 37 st. Work in ribbing as on back for 2½ in. Change to size 9 needles and increase 10 st evenly across the next row. Work first 2 rows of pattern until work measures 12 in. At beg of next 2 rows cast off 3 st. Continue to dec 1 st each side of work every other row at the same time working a set of pattern as on back above the armholes. When there are 25 st left on needle cast off 3 st at beg of next 6 rows. Cast off remaining st. Sew shoulder seams.

COLLAR: With size 4 needles pick up 67 st around neck edge including those from holder. Work in row 1 and 2 of pattern for 1 inch. Change to size 9 needles and work 1 more inch of pattern. Work in rows 1 thru 8 of pattern. Cast off loosely.

Sew in sleeves, sew side seams and sew on buttons. Block.
