Barclay Tartan Socks Pattern

SIZES 10½ to 12

MATERIALS:
Chadwick's Red Heart Sock and Sweater Yarn, 3 Ply, Art. E.255, Shrink and Stretch Resist, 2 skeins (1 oz. pull-out skeins) of Black, 1 skein each of Oxford, Yellow, and White.
Milwards “Phantom” Aluminum or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Double-pointed Sock Needles, 1 set No. 3 (3 mm. size)
Bobbins.

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at cuff with No. 2 knitting pins and Black, cast on 64 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 3 inches, decreasing 3 sts on last row.

NOTE: Vertical stripes are omitted on chart, to be worked later. When changing from one color to another always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making holes.

Change to No. 3 knitting pins and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: P 1, k 4, drop Black, * attach a bobbin of Oxford, with Oxford k 5, p 1, k 5, drop Oxford, attach a bobbin of Black, with Black, k 4, p 1, k 4, drop Black. Repeat from * once more, attach a bobbin of Oxford, with Oxford k 5, p 1, k 5, drop Oxford, attach a bobbin of Black, with Black k 4, p 1. 2nd row: With Black k 1, p 4, drop Black, * with Oxford p 5, k 1, p 5, drop Oxford, with Black p 4, k 1, p 4, drop Black. Repeat from * once more, with Oxford, p 5, k 1, p 5, drop Oxford, with Black p 4, k 1. Starting with the 3rd row on chart, work in pat­tern following chart, working the knit and purl sts as established until top of chart is reached. Then repeat from beginning of chart until 80 rows are completed, ending with wrong side facing.

Divide sts for Heel as follows: With a double-pointed needle and Black, k 16. Work in pattern over next 29 sts. Place remaining 16 sts on other end of double-pointed needle—these sts to be worked later for Heel. Work in pattern over instep sts only, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row. There are 31 sts on needle. Continue in pat­tern until 60 rows are completed. Break off.

HEEL … Attach Black to wrong side of heel sts and work as follows: 1st row: Sl 1, p across. 2nd row: * Sl 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat last 2 rows until heel measures 2¼ inches, ending with a purl row.

To Turn Heel: 1st row: K 18, k 2 tog, k 1, turn. 2nd row: Sl 1, p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn. 3rd row: Sl 1, k 6, k 2 tog, k 1, turn. 4th row: Sl 1, p 7, p 2 tog, p 1, turn. 5th row: Sl 1, k 8, k 2 tog, k 1, turn. 6th row: Sl 1, p 9, p 2 tog, p 1, turn. 7th row: Sl 1, k 10, k 2 tog, k 1, turn. 8th row: Sl 1, p 11, p 2 tog, p 1, turn. 9th row: Sl 1, k 12, k 2 tog, k 1, turn. 10th row: Sl 1, p 13, p 2 tog, p 1, turn. 11th row: Sl 1, k 14, k 2 tog, k 1, turn. 12th row: Sl 1, p 15, p 2 tog, p 1, turn. 13th row: Sl 1, k 16, k 2 tog, turn. 14th row: Sl 1, p 16, p 2 tog (18 sts remain). Break off.

To Shape Gusset: With right side facing and spare needle, pick up and knit 16 sts along right side of heel. With same needle k 9 sts from heel needle. With another double-pointed needle k 9, then pick up and k 16 sts along other side of heel. There are 25 sts on each needle. Work over these sts only as follows: 1st row: P across. 2nd row: K 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k across to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1. Repeat last 2 rows until 32 sts remain. Work without decreasing until sole measures same as instep, ending with a p row.

Joining of Sole and Instep: K 16 sts of sole (this is 3rd needle); with an­ other needle (1st needle) k across other 16 sts of sole; then with second needle k across instep sts increasing 1 st; on third needle, k across. Knit around until foot measures from back of Heel—8¼ inches for Size 10½; 8¾ inches for Size 11; 9 inches for Size 11½; 9½ inches for Size 12; or 2¼ inches less than desired length.

To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: On 1st needle k across to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1; on 2nd needle k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k across to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1; on 3rd needle k 1, sl 1, k 1, p.s.s.o., k to end of rnd. 2nd rnd: K around. Repeat last 2 rnds alternately until 20 sts remain. With 3rd needle k across sts of 1st needle (10 sts on each of 2 needles). Break off, leaving a 10-inch length of yarn. Weave sts together.

VERTICAL STRIPES … With crochet hook and 2 strands of colors indicated by arrows on chart, make a row of chain st in each of the purl rib sts.
   Fasten all ends securely on wrong side. Sew up back seams. Press lightly.
