The rich elegance of this knitted Afghan, made in Red, White and Blue, shows the exquisite handiwork of the gentlewomen of the Old South.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

MINERVA MILADY KNITTING YARN (4 ounce skeins)
3 Skeins—Red
1 Skein —White
4 Skeins—Blue
—OR—
MINERVA AFGHAN GERMANTOWN (2 ounce skeins)
6 Skeins—Red
2 Skeins—White
8 Skeins—Blue

ATHENA NONINFLAMMABLE NEEDLES—1 Pr. Size 10—10 inch

GAUGE: 4 Sts. to 1 inch.
(Finished Squares measure about 5 inches.)

ATHENA NONINFLAMMABLE CROCHET HOOK— Size 5—6 inch

This Afghan contains 108 Squares (54 Blue, and 54 Red, White and Blue) joined together alternately, 9 Squares wide and 12 Squares long.

TO MAKE A BLUE SQUARE:

(Multiple of 6 Sts.) Cast on 18 Sts. and work as follows:
ROWS 1—2—and 3: * K. 3, P. 3, repeat from * across row.
ROWS 4—5—and 6: * P. 3, K. 3, repeat from * across row.
Repeat from Row 1, 2 times more, then repeat Rows 1, 2, and 3 once more, bind off.
Work 1 Row S.C. all around Square, increasing 1 St. at corners.

TO MAKE RED, WHITE AND BLUE SQUARE:

(Multiple of 4 Sts.) With Red cast on 16 Sts., drop the Red Strand but do not break.
ROW 1—Join White, * K. 3, Slip 1, repeat from * across row.
ROW 2—With White, * Slip 1, P. 3, repeat from * across row.
ROW 3—Join Blue, * Slip 1, K. 3, repeat from * across row.
ROW 4—With Blue, * P. 3, Slip 1, repeat from * across row.
ROW 5—With Red, K. 1, * Slip 1, K. 3, repeat from * across row, ending Slip 1, K. 2.
ROW 6—With Red, P. 2, * Slip 1, P. 3, repeat from * across row, ending Slip 1, P. 1
ROW 7—With White, K. 2, * Slip 1, K. 3, repeat from * across row, ending Slip 1, K. 1.
ROW 8—With White, P. 1, * Slip 1, P. 3, repeat from * across row, ending Slip 1, P. 2.
Repeat these 8 rows, 2 times more, working 2 rows of each color, bind off. (Rows 9 and 10 Blue)
With Red, work 2 rows S.C. all around square, increasing 1 St. at corners.

Sew squares together on wrong side, then with Red work 1 row S.C. all around edge of Afghan, working in back loops of Sts., increasing at corners. With Blue work 2 more rows around Afghan in same manner.
