Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Pearl Cotton, size 5, 4 balls each of two contrasting colors. Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size).

Use thread double throughout, 1 strand of each color.

Starting at bottom, cast on 3 sts and k across. 2nd row: Increase in 1st st, then k remaining sts. Repeat 2nd row until there are 26 sts on needle. Next row: Increase in 1st st, k 9 (11 sts in all), k 2 together, thread over, k 2 together, thread over, k 2 together, k 10 (thus a V-stripe is started). Following row: Same as 2nd row. Next row: Increase in 1st st, k 9, k 2 together, thread over, k 3, thread over, k 2 together, k 10. Following row: Same as 2nd row. Next row: Increase in 1st st, k 9, k 2 together, thread over, k 5, thread over, k 2 together, k 10. Following row: Same as 2nd row. Continue in this manner, having 2 sts more in garter st section at center in every other row until there are 45 sts on needle (21 sts in center section). Next row: Increase in 1st st, k 9, k 2 together, thread over, k 8, k 2 together, thread over, k 2 together, thread over, k 2 together, k 7, thread over, k 2 together, k 10 (thus second V-stripe is started). Following row: Same as 2nd row. Next row: Increase in 1st st, k 9, k 2 together, thread over, k 8, k 2 together, thread over, k 3, thread over, k 2 together, k 7, thread over, k 2 together, k 10. Next row: Same as 2nd row. Continue in this manner until there are 50 sts on needle (13 holes in 1st V-stripe). Next row: Increase in 1st st, k 19, k 2 together, thread over, k 7, thread over, k 2 together, k 19 (51 sts on needle). Following row: Same as 2nd row. Continue 2nd V-stripe as for 1st V-stripe until there are 21 sts in center section (64 sts on needle). Next row: Increase in 1st st, k 19, k 2 together, thread over, k 8, k 2 together, thread over, k 2 together, thread over, k 2 together, k 7, thread over, k 2 together, k 19 (thus 3rd V-stripe is started). Following row: Same as 2nd row. Continue working in pattern until there are 13 holes in 2nd V-stripe. Then work in garter st to within 3rd V-stripe and continue as before until there are 21 sts in center section of 3rd V-stripe. Then start 4th V-stripe in same way as 3rd V-stripe was started, and continue to work the 3rd and 4th V-stripes until there are 29 sts in center section of 4th V-stripe. Next row: Same as 2nd row (110 sts on needle). Bind off very loosely. Fasten and break off.
