Materials: Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet, 2 balls of White, size 5. Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size). 2 small buttons.
Starting at bottom, cast on 101 sts and k across for 9 rows. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 6, * thread over, k 2 together, k 5, k 2 together, thread over, k 1. Repeat from * across to within last 5 sts then k these 5 sts. 2nd row: K 5, p 2, * thread over, p 2 together, p 3, p 2 together, thread over, p 3. Repeat from * across, ending row with thread over, p 2 (instead of p 3), k last 5 sts. 3rd row: K 8, * thread over, k 1, sl 1, pass k st over sl st, k 1, k 2 together, thread over, k 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with thread over, k 3 (instead of k 5), k last 5 sts. 4th row: K 5, p 4, * thread over, p 3 together, thread over, p 7. Repeat from * across, ending row with thread over, p 4 (instead of p 7), k last 5 sts. 5th row: K 8, k 2 together, * thread over, k 1, thread over, k 2 together, k 5, k 2 together. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 3 (instead of k 5), k last 5 sts. 6th row: K 5, p 2, p 2 together, * thread over, p 3, thread over, p 2 together, p 3, p 2 together. Repeat from * across, ending row with p 2 (instead of p 3), k last 5 sts. 7th row: K 6, k 2 together, * thread over, k 5, thread over, sl 1, k 1, pass sl st over k st, k 1, k 2 together. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 1, k last 5 sts. 8th row: K 5, p 2 together, * thread over, p 7, thread over, p 3 together. Repeat from * across, ending row with thread over, p 9, k 5. These 8 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 8 rows until work measures 16 inches. Work in garter st (k each row) for ½ inch, ending with wrong side of work toward you. Next row: K across first 25 sts, bind off tightly next 51 sts (for front of neck), k across remaining 25 sts. K across these last 25 sts until work measures 3½ inches from neck shaping, ending at outside edge. Following row: K across, then cast on 25 sts (50 sts on needle). Continue to work in garter st over these 50 sts for 2 inches, making a buttonhole after the first ½ inch and then after 1 inch. (To make a buttonhole, on one row k 3 sts in from neck edge, bind off 4 sts; and on the next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.) Bind off. Then attach thread to neck edge at opposite side and work to correspond with right side, omitting buttonholes. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
