Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 6 balls (1 oz. balls).
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size).
½ yd. chamois lining.
3 buttons.
Measurements: Length from top of shoulder—19½ inches. Bust—34 inches.
Gauge: 17 sts make 2 inches; 8 rows make 1 inch.
Back: Starting at bottom, cast on 136 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 114 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches. Then on next row and every 3rd row thereafter, inc. 1 st at both ends until there are 140 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10 inches.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows; then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 118 sts remain. Hereafter work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 58 sts remain. Bind off.
Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 62 sts and work in ribbing for 4 inches. Then, on next row and every 5th row thereafter, inc. 1 st at underarm side until there are 72 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches.
To Shape Neck and Armhole: To shape neck, dec. 1 st at front edge every other row; at the same time bind off 8 sts at armhole edge once, and 1 st every other row 8 times (51 sts). Hereafter keep armhole edge straight (continuing with decreases at front edge) until 32 sts remain. Work straight until armhole measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, bind off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off.
Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, reversing shapings.
Pockets: Starting at bottom, cast on 34 sts and work in ribbing for 3½ inches. Bind off.
Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Sew up shoulder seams.
Block to size specified. Cut chamois lining into 1½-inch strips, and bind all edges and tops of pockets, turning raw edges of strips under. Pin pockets in line with underarm seam, as in illustration, and sew in place. Sew on buttons 1½ inches in from edge of Left Front, as in illustration.
Tabs. Measure off four 18-inch strands of yarn, twist tightly, then double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Fasten both raw ends on Right Front, 1¼ inches in from bound edge, to correspond with top button. Cut 2 pieces of chamois, 1½ inches wide and 5 inches long; paste these pieces back to back and trim corners as in illustration. Make a vertical slit 1 inch from end, large enough to draw cord through; draw cord through and fasten securely. Then make a horizontal slit ¾ inch in from opposite end, for button. With needle and yarn, take two or three stitches on cord, to form buttonloop. Make two more tabs in same way. Button vest as in illustration.
