BACK - With size 5 needles, cast on 80 (86) sts. Work k 1, P 1 ribbing for 2 ½ ins.
Pattern - Row 1 - wrong side - With size 10 ½ needles, p 1, * with yarn in front, slip 1 as to p, p 5; repeat from *, end last repeat p 6.
Row 2 - K 1, * k 3, knitting in front loop of sts, k 3rd st on left needle, do not slip from needle, k first st, do not slip from needle, k 2nd st, slip all 3 sts from needle; repeat from *, end k last st.
Row 3 - P 1, * P 5, with yarn in front, slip 1 as to p; repeat from *, end p 1.
Row 4 - K 1, * inserting needle in back loop of sts, k 2nd st on left needle, do not slip from needle, k 3rd st, do not slip from needle, k first st from front, slip all 3 sts from needle, k 3; repeat from *, end last repeat k 4.
Repeat these 4 rows for pat. Work even in pat. until 12 ins. above ribbing. Mark for underarm.
Armholes - Bind off 6 sts at beg. of each of next 2 rows; 68 (74) sts. Work even until 7½ (8) ins. above marker.
Shoulder Shaping - Bind off 11 (12) sts at beg. of each of next 4 rows. Place 24 (26) sts on holder for back of hood.
LEFT FRONT - With size 5 needles, cast on 59 (65) sts.
Row 1 - wrong side - P 15, work k 1, p 1 ribbing to end.
Row 2 - Work ribbing to within 15 sts of end, k 7 for border, with yarn at back, slip 1 as to p for turning st, k 7 for facing.
Repeat last 2 rows until 2½ ins. from beg., end on right side. With size 10½ needles, p 15 for facing and border, work as for pat. row 1 to end. Continue pat., working 15 sts at front edge for border and facing as before, until same length as back to armhole, end on wrong side-underarm edge. Mark for underarm.
Armhole - Bind off 12 sts at beg. of next row; 47 (53) sts. Work even until 6½ ins. above marker, end on right side-front edge.
Neck and Shoulder Shaping - Work 21 sts, place on holder for hood, finish row. Continue pat. decreasing 1 st at neck edge every row 4 (8) times, shaping shoulder same as right side of back when armhole is same length.
Mark position of 6 buttons evenly spaced on front border, having first button 8 rows from lower edge and 6th button 1 ½ ins. below neck edge.
RIGHT FRONT - With size 5 needles, cast on 59 (65) sts.
Row 1 - wrong side - Work k 1, p 1 ribbing to within 15 sts of end, p 15.
Row 2 - K 7 for facing, with yarn at back, slip 1 as to p for turning st, k 7 for border, work ribbing to end. Repeat these 2 rows until 7 rows from beg., end at front edge.
Buttonhole rows - K 2, bind off 2 sts, work until 7 sts from bind-off, bind off 2 sts, finish row. On next row, cast on 2 sts over each buttonhole.
Work right front to correspond to left front, repeating buttonholes opposite markers, shaping at opposite sides. Sew shoulder seams.
HOOD - With size 10½ needles, take up 21 sts of right front, join yarn, from right side pick up and k 18 sts on right neck edge to shoulder seam, take up 24 (26) sts of back and k, increasing 2 (0) sts, pick up and k 18 sts on left neck edge, take up 21 sts of left front and k 13, slip 1, k 7; 104 sts.
Row 1 - wrong side - P 15, place marker on needle, work as for pat. row 1 on back to within 15 sts of end, place marker on needle, p 15.
Row 2 - K 7, slip 1 as before, k 7, work as for pat. row 2 to next marker, k 7, slip 1, k 7. Continue pat. on 74 center sts working borders and facing each side for front of hood until 12 ins. above picked up row, end on right side. Work 52 sts of next row and slip on size 5 needle, with size 10½ needle finish row. Break off leaving an end for weaving. Weave sts tog.
SLEEVES - With size 5 needles, cast on 46 (50) sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 2½ ins. increasing 10 (12) sts evenly spaced across last row; 56 (62) sts. With size 10½ needles, work pat. as for back increasing 1 st each side every 2 ins. 6 times, with care to carry out pat. on added sts; 68 (74) sts. Work even until 14½ ins. above ribbing. Place marker each side for end of sleeve and beg. of underarm. Work even for 2 ins. Bind off.
FINISHING - Sew seams, sewing sleeve seam from lower edge to underarm marker, leaving last 2 ins. free. Sew in sleeves with sleeve seam at center underarm, sewing 2 ins. left free to bound-off sts. Turn back front and hood facings and hem On wrong side. Finish buttonholes in blanket st. Block.
