Drop marker, go back and pick up light and, starting with 1st needle, knit around until sock measures 4½" from marker for size 8½, 5½" from marker for size 9½, 6½" from marker for size 10½—or about 4" less than desired size when completed.

BEANIE No. 2553

Repeat from * around (66 sts). K 2 rnds straight. Continue in this manner, decreasing 12 sts every 3rd rnd, and having 2 sts less between decreases on each dec. rnd until 18 sts remain. Break yarn, leaving a 6" strand. Thread this strand into a blunt-end needle, pass through the remaining sts, draw tight and fasten securely on wrong side.

POMPON ... Cut 2 circles of cardboard, each 3" in diameter. Then cut a circle 1" in diameter at center of each cardboard. Place 1 cardboard circle on top of the other. Cut 3 strands of dark color, each about 4½ yds. long. Draw 1 end of these strands through center of circle from back, pass them over outer edge, and draw them through center of circle again. Continue in this manner around circle until strands are used up. With sharp scissors, cut yarn between the 2 cardboards, at outer edge. Cut 2 strands of dark color, each 8" long and tie tightly around strands between cardboard circles. Remove cardboard and trim pompon evenly. Sew to top of Beanie.

GLOVES No. 2553

LEFT HAND … Work same as for Mittens until the 13 sts for thumb have been taken off on safety pin. Cast on 3 sts and knit remainder of rnd. Continue to knit around until glove measures 3½" from end of ribbing (or until glove reaches the base of fingers when tried on). Put glove on and mark fingers by putting a safety pin on palm and back of hand between each finger, having 10 sts for forefinger, 9 sts for middle finger, 8 sts for ring finger, and 9 sts for little finger—-when an odd number of sts is required for a finger, always have the larger number of sts on the back of the hand, with 1 st less on the palm. Knit around to where the sts are marked off for little finger, knit the sts for little finger, and take the remaining sts off on a strand of yarn, to be worked later.

Little Finger … Divide the sts for little finger on 3 needles, cast on 2 sts for inner side of finger, and work around in stockinette stitch (k each rnd) until finger, when tried on, reaches ¼" from fingertip, or about 1¾" in all. Next rnd: * K 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * around. Work 1 rnd straight. Following rnd: K 2 tog. around. Break yarn, leaving a 6" end. Thread this end into a sewing needle and run through the remaining sts. Draw tight and darn in end on wrong side, to reinforce tip.

Ring Finger … Pick up sts for ring finger from strand of yarn, and 2 sts where the 2 sts were cast on for little finger. Cast on 2 sts between palm and back of hand as before. Divide the sts on 3 needles and work around until ½" from tip (about 2¼" in all). Shape tip as follows: 1st rnd: * K 2 tog., k 3. Repeat from * around. Work 1 rnd straight. 3rd rnd: * K 2 tog., k 2. Repeat from * around. K 1 rnd straight. 5th rnd: K 2 tog. around. Break yarn and finish as for little finger.

Middle Finger … Pick up sts for middle finger and 2 sts on the 2 sts cast on for ring finger. Cast on 2 sts as before. Join and work around for 2½" (½" from fingertip). Finish as for ring finger.

Forefinger … Pick up sts for forefinger and 2 sts on the 2 sts cast on for middle finger. Work as for ring finger.

Thumb … Pick up the 13 sts from safety pin for thumb, and 3 sts on the 3 cast-on sts. Join and knit around, decreasing 1 st at inside of thumb on each rnd twice. Work straight until thumb measures 1¾" (½" from fingertip). Finish as for ring finger.

RIGHT HAND … Work to correspond. Press through damp cloth with hot iron.
