Cable Cap and Sweater Set

1 to 1 ½ Years

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" NYLON or "DAWN" SOCK & SWEATER YARN
5 ozs. Light Blue.
1 oz. White or colors of your choice.
1 pr. each knitting needles No. 1 and No. 2.
1 set double pointed needles No. 2.
6 buttons for Sweater. ¾ inch button for Cap.
GAUGE: 19 sts = 2 inches. 11 rows = 1 inch.

SWEATER

BACK: With Blue on No. 1 needles, cast on 100 stitches (sts) and work in ribbing of knit (K) 1, purl (P) 1 for 1 ¼ inches. Change to No. 2 needles and work in stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) until back measures 8 ½ inches from beginning ending with a K row.

YOKE PATTERN RIBBING: 1st and 2nd Rows. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, at the same time bind off 5 sts at the beginning of each row, drop Blue.

Next 2 Rows. Attach White and P across each row, cut yarn.

5th Row. Pick up Blue, P across row.

6th and 7th Rows. Work in ribbing, keeping ribbing uniform. Work even in stockinette st until armhole measures 3 inches from 1st decreasing point ending with a K row. Working even, repeat 1st 7 rows of pattern ribbing.

Next 4 Rows. Bind off 14 sts in ribbing at beginning of each row. Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.

RIGHT FRONT: With Blue on No. 1 needles cast on 57 sts, K 15 (border), then work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 across remaining 42 sts.

2nd Row. Work in ribbing across 42 sts, K 2, P 3, K 2, P 1, K 7 (border). Repeat 1st and 2nd rows until ribbing measures 1 ¼ inches from beginning, ending with 1st row of pattern. Change to No. 2 needles, keeping 15 sts at front edge in pattern all the way up front for border.

CABLE PATTERN: 1st Row. P 17, K 2, P 4, K 2, P 17, then work border sts (K 2, P 3, K 2, P 1, K 7).

2nd Row. K across row.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows 5 times.

13th Row. Repeat 1st row.

14th Row. Cable Twist Row. K 34, slip next 2 sts on a double pointed needle and place in front of work, K the next 2 sts, then K the 2 sts from double pointed needle, K 19. Repeat 1st through 14th rows 5 times. Work even until front measures same as back to armhole. Shape armhole same as on back. Work yoke pattern same as on back keeping border sts uniform but working 3rd, 4th and 5th rows same as on back yoke across border sts. When armhole measures 1 ¾ inches from 1st decreasing point ending at neck edge, bind off 18 sts at neck edge, then decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row until 28 sts remain. Work even until armhole measures same as back armhole. Bind off shoulder same as back shoulder. Mark position for 6 buttons evenly spaced, placing 1st button ½ inch from bottom, 5th button in White stripe and top button will be in neckband.

LEFT FRONT: Work same as right front, reversing the shaping and working double buttonholes on border sts to correspond to buttons.

BUTTONHOLES: Work across 2 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work next 4 sts, bind off next 3 sts, work across remaining sts. On next row cast on 3 sts over bound off sts.

SLEEVES: With Blue on No. 1 needles, cast on 56 sts and work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 1 ¼ inches. Change to No. 2 needles and work in stockinette st, increasing 8 sts evenly spaced on first row, then increase 1 st on each side every inch until there are 72 sts on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 9 ½ inches from beginning or length desired.

Next 2 Rows. Bind off 7 sts at the beginning of each row, then decrease 1 st on each side every other row until 36 sts remain.

Next 4 Rows. Bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row, bind off remaining sts. Block each section. Sew seams and sew sleeves in position.

NECKBAND: With Blue on No. 1 needles and right side of work toward you, pick up 106 sts around neck and top border sts, work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 3 rows.

Next 2 Rows. Continue in ribbing, working double buttonholes same as on left front. Work 1 row in ribbing, cut yarn. Attach White, work 1 row of ribbing, bind off in ribbing. Fold back borders of both fronts and sew to wrong side. Buttonhole stitch around double buttonholes. Sew buttons in position.

CAP

With Blue on double pointed needles, cast on 110 sts, divide sts on 3 needles (37 sts on 2 needles, 36 sts on 3rd needle), join. Place a marker at beginning of each round. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1 for 3 rounds.

Next Round. P all around (ridge to be turned under).

Next 2 Rounds. Work in ribbing, drop Blue. Attach White and K all around.

Next Round. P all around, cut White.

Next Round. Pick up Blue and K all around. Next 2 Rounds. Work in ribbing.

Start cable pattern. 1st Round. * P 2, K 4, P 2, K 14, repeat from * all around.

2nd Round. K all around.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rounds 5 times.

13th Round. Repeat 1st round.

14th Round. Cable twist round: * K 2, slip next 2 sts on a double pointed needle and place in front of work, K next 2 sts, then K the 2 sts from double pointed needle, K 16, repeat from * all around.

Repeat 1st through 14th rounds twice.

43rd Round. Keeping cable pattern even and working cable twist on every 14th round, decrease as follows: * P 2, K 4, P 2, sl 1 as if to K, K 1, pass slip stitch over knit stitch (p.s.s.o.), K 11, sl next st over last K st, repeat from * all around.

44th and every alternate Round. K all around.

Repeat last 2 rounds, working in above manner having 2 sts less in each section between cables until 50 sts remain on needles.

Next Round. * P 2, K 4, P 2, K 2 together (tog), repeat from * all around.

Next Round. Work cable twist round.

Next Round. * K 2 tog, K 1, repeat from * all around, cut yarn leaving a length long enough to draw through remaining sts, fasten securely.

At ridge turn 1st 3 rounds of cap to inside and sew in position.

PEAK: With Blue on No. 2 straight needles cast on 7 sts, working in stockinette st throughout, work 2 rows even.

Next Row. K 2, increase in next st, K 1, increase in next st, K 2 (2 increases). Work 1 row even.

Next Row. K 3, increase in next st, K 1, increase in next st, K 3. Repeat last 2 rows increasing 2 sts every other row until there are 33 sts on needle.

Next Row. K 16, increase in next st, K 16. Work even until piece measures 5 ½ inches from beginning ending with a P row.

Next Row. K 16, K 2 tog, K 16. Work 1 row even.

Next Row. Start decreasing as follows: K 14, K 2 tog, K 1, K 2 tog, K 14. Work 1 row even.

Next Row. K 13, K 2 tog, K 1, K 2 tog, K 13.

Continue to decrease in the above manner having 2 sts less every other row until 7 sts remain, bind off. Fold in half. Sew in position over 3 cable patterns.

BUTTON: With Blue on No. 1 needles cast on 7 sts, working in stockinette st, increase 1 st each side every other row until there are 15 sts on needle. Work 2 rows even, then decrease 1 st each side every other row until 7 sts remain, bind off, leaving a length. Thread into needle, insert button and gather together. Sew button to center of cap.
