Size 1

Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Saxony, 3 balls (⅔ oz. balls).
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand, 1 skein of a contrasting color.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
3 small buttons.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 12 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 80 sts and work in moss st (on one row, k 1, p 1 alternately across; on next row, k over the p sts and p over the k sts) for 1 inch. Then work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), until piece measures 5½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 70 sts remain. Work straight, keeping the 2 sts at both ends k sts, until piece measures 3 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then bind off 25 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining sts.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 46 sts and work in moss st for 1 inch. Then work in stockinette st, keeping the 10 sts of center front in moss st, until piece measures 4¾ inches. On next row and every 1½ inches thereafter, make a buttonhole 3 sts in from front edge until 3 buttonholes in all are made (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 3 sts; then, on next row, cast on 3 sts to replace those bound off); at the same time, when underarm measures same as underarm of Back, shape armhole as follows: Starting at underarm, bind off 5 sts once, then dec. 1 st at armhole edge each row until 36 sts remain. Hereafter continue as before, but keeping the 2 sts at armhole edge k sts, until piece measures 3 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 5 sts every other row 3 times. Bind off remaining sts.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Right Sleeve (Epaulette). Starting at bottom, cast on 54 sts and work in moss st for 1 inch. Then work in stockinette st, keeping the 2 sts at both ends k sts, until piece measures 5½ inches in all. To shape top of sleeve, dec. 1 st at end of each row until 26 sts remain. Work straight for 1½ inches, keeping the 2 sts at both ends k sts. With right side of work toward you, bind off 14 sts and continue across. Hereafter, work over remaining 12 sts, decreasing 1 st at inner edge each row until all sts are worked off.

Left Sleeve. Work exactly as for Right Sleeve, reversing shapings.

Place epaulette sleeves between shapings of Back and Front and sew in place. Sew up underarm and sleeve seams.

Collar. With wrong side of work toward you, starting ½ inch in from Left Front edge, pick up 85 sts all around neck edge to within ½ inch from Left Front edge, turn. Work back and forth over these 85 sts in moss st until piece measures 2 inches. Bind off.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Embroidery. Trace the hen diagram (which is actual size) as above, and with Six Strand work as for Embroidery on Knitted Creeper.
