Knitted Cap Pattern #5015

Infant Size

Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Saxony, 1 ball (⅔ oz. ball).
A set of 4 double-pointed steel needles No. 13.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6.
2 small buttons.

Starting at tip of crown, cast on 2 sts on each of 3 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. 1st rnd: K around. 2nd rnd: P around. 3rd rnd: K around, increasing in each st. 4th rnd: P around. 5th rnd: K around, increasing 1 st at both ends of each needle (6 sts on each needle). Hereafter, repeat the last 2 rnds alternately, thus increasing 1 st at both ends of each needle every other rnd until there are 44 sts on each needle. On next rnd, bind off 44 sts of one section for back of neck. Hereafter work is done in rows instead of rnds. Work back and forth over the remaining 88 sts in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Then work in garter st (k each row) until piece measures 7 inches from tip of crown. Bind off (this is front edge). Turn front edge back over cap 1 inch. Work a row of s c closely together around lower edge of cap, easing work in as necessary, in order to make it fit closely to neck.

Chin Strap. Cast on 6 sts and work in garter st, making a buttonhole after the first ½ inch and another 4 inches thereafter (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off the 2 center sts; on next row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off.) Work straight until piece measures 5 inches. Bind off.

Sew on a button at each side of cap and fasten with chin strap, as in illustration.
