Twin Sweater Set with Seed Yoke Stitch Pattern

Size 8 to 10 Years

MATERIAL:
For Slip-on: 5 balls 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball)
For Cardigan: 6 balls 3 ply Fingering Yarn (1 oz. ball)
1 pair S P. knitting needles No. 2 (3 mm.) and No. 3 (3¼ mm.)
1 set D.P. knitting needles No. 2 (3 mm.)
1 yard grosgrain ribbon 6 buttons

GAUGE: 7 sts. = 1 inch

CARDIGAN

BACK: Cast on 104 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2½ inch. Increase 4 sts. at even intervals across last row. Change to No. 3 needles and stockinette st. With 108 sts. work even until the entire piece measures 12 inch. or any desired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beginning of the next 2 rows 8 sts., at the beg. of the next 4 rows 2 sts. (84 sts. left). Work even for 6½ inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for shoulders at the beg. of the next 6 rows 9 sts., rem. 30 sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT: Cast on 61 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2½ inch. Keeping the 7 center front sts. in garter st. for buttonhole border throughout the entire front. Change to No. 3 needles and stockinette st. Increase inside border 2 sts. at even intervals across first row. With 63 sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next row at underarm edge 10 sts. and at the beg. of the next 2 rows at underarm edge 2 sts. (49 sts. left.) Work even for 4½ inch. from the first binding off. Bind off for neck 14 sts. at center edge and then always 2 sts. at neck edge every other row until 27 sts. are left over. Work as high as back and bind off at armhole edge 9 sts. 3 times for shoulder. Work the other front to correspond.

SLEEVE: Cast on 48 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2 inch. Change to No. 3 needles and stockinette st. and incr. 6 sts. at even intervals across first row. In­crease 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 6th row until there are 84 sts. on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve measures 15 inch. or any desired length to underarm. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 6 sts. Decrease 1 st. at the beginning of the next 10 rows. (62 sts. left.) Decrease 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row 6 times. (50 sts. left.) Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 30 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work other sleeve to correspond.

POCKETS: With No. 3 needles cast on 23 sts. Work in seed st. for 2 rows. Incr 1 st. at each end of needle every other row until 29 sts. on needle. Work even until piece is 3¼ inch. high. Bind off K as K and P as P. Make the 2nd pocket the same way.

FINISHING: Sew up side, sleeve and shoulder seams and sew in sleeves. Sew pockets in place. Right side facing you, pick up with No. 2 needles 86 sts. around the neck and K1, P1 for 6 rows. Bind off loosely K as K and P as P. Sew the grosgrain ribbon down the 2 fronts on inside and have buttonholes made. Sew on buttons and steam lightly.

SLIP-ON

BACK: Cast on 98 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2½ inch. Change to No. 3 needles and stock­inette st. and incr. 1 st. at the beg. of the next row. Work even for ½ inch. Inc. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of the knit row every ½ inch. 3 times. With 105 sts. work even until the entire piece measures 11 inch. or any de­sired length to underarm. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 7 sts., at the beg. of the next 4 rows 2 sts. (83 sts. left.) Start seed st. yoke:
1st row: (right side) K41, P1, K41
2nd row: (wrong side) P40, K1, P1, K1, P40
3rd row: K39, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K39
4th row: P38, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P38
5th row: K37, P1 K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K37
Continue this way working 1 more st. on each side of center st. every row in seed st. until all sts. are worked in seed st. Work even until 6 inch. from the first binding off. Bind off foil shoulders at the beg. of the next 4 rows 13 sts., rem. 31 sts. bind off for neck.

FRONT: Cast on 100 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for 2½ inch. Change to No. 3 needles and stock­inette st. and incr. 1 st. at the beg. of the next row. Work even for ½ inch. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of the knit row every ½ inch 3 times. With 107 sts. work even until the entire piece measures like back. Bind off for armhole at the beg. of the next 2 rows 8 sts. and at the beg. of the next 4 rows 2 sts. (83 sts. left.) Work seed st. yoke as on back until 3¾ inch. from the first binding off. Work across 32 sts. and put them on a stitch holder. Bind off 19 sts. for neck and work over rem. 32 sts. Work over these 32 sts. only and bind off 2 sts. at neck edge every other row until 26 sts. are left, continuing the seed st. pattern, working 1 more st. in seed st. at armhole edge every row until all sts. are worked in seed st. Work as high as back and bind off at armhole edge 13 sts. twice. Work the other side of the neck to correspond.

SLEEVE: Cast on 66 sts. with No. 2 needles and work in ribbing K1, P1 for ¾ inch. Change to No. 3 needles and stock. st. increasing 11 sts. at even intervals across next row. Incr. 1 st. at the beg. and at the end of every 4th row until 83 sts. on needle. Work even until the entire sleeve meas­ures 3¼ inch. Bind off at the beg. of the next 2 rows 5 sts. Decrease 1 st. at the beg. of the next 10 rows. (63 sts. left.) Decrease 1 st. at the beg. and end of every 4th row 6 times. (51 sts. left.) Bind off 2 sts. at the beg. of each row until 35 sts. are left over. Bind off. Work the other sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING: Sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams and sew in sleeves. Right side facing you, pick up for neck with No. 2 sock needles 96 sts. and K1, P1 for 6 rounds. Bind off K as K and P as P. Steam lightly.
