Basic Cardigan Pattern

Materials Required:
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "DAWN" BRAEBURN SPORT YARN
or
"DAWN" SOCK & SWEATER YARN
or
"DAWN" or "CLOVER LEAF" NYLON
Size 12—10 ozs. Scarlet or color desired
Size 14—11 ozs.
Size 16—12 ozs. and
"STAR" RAYON, Article 300, 3 skeins each Yellow and Lt. Hunter Green for trim
1 pr. each knitting needles No. 1 and No. 2

Gauge: 8 sts = 1 inch.

Directions are given for size 12. Sizes 14 and 16 are given in brackets.

BACK: On No. 1 needles cast on 132 (140, 148) sts and work in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for 2 inches. Change to No. 2 needles and work in stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) until back measures 15 (15¼, 15½) inches from the beginning.
Next 2 Rows—Bind off 7 (8, 9) sts at the beginning of each row, then decrease 1 st on each side every other row until 108 (112, 116) sts remain on needle. Work even until armhole measures 7½ (7¾, 8) inches from 1st decreasing point.
Next 4 Rows—Bind off 13 sts at the beginning of each row.
Next 2 Rows—Bind off 12 (13, 14) sts at the beginning of each row, bind off remaining 32 (34, 36) sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: On No. 1 needles cast on 70 (74, 78) sts and work as follows: K 7, P 8, K 1, work in ribbing of P 2, K 2 over remaining 54 (58, 62) sts.
2nd Row—Work in ribbing over next 54 (58, 62) sts, P 1, Y O, K 2 tog, K 4, Y O, K 2 tog, P 1, K 6.
3rd Row—Same as 1st row.
4th Row—Work in ribbing over next 54 (58, 62) sts, P 1, K 2 tog, Y O, K 4, K 2 tog, Y O, P 1, K 6.
Continue in the above manner until front measures 2 inches from the beginning ending at side edge.
Next Row—Change to No. 2 needles, K across 54 (58, 62) sts, work in pattern over next 10 sts, K 6 sts.
Next Row—K 7, P 8, K 1, P across remaining sts. Con­tinue in the above manner working garter st over 6 sts at front edge, pattern over next 10 sts and stockinette st on remaining sts for entire front. Work even until front meas­ures same as back to underarm ending on wrong side (armhole edge).
Next Row—Bind off 7 (8, 9) sts at beginning of row, then decrease 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 58 (60, 62) sts remain on needle. Work even until armhole measures 5¼ (5½, 5¾) inches from 1st decreasing point ending at neck edge.
Next Row—Bind off 12 (13, 14) sts at neck edge, then decrease 1 st at neck edge every other row until 38 (39, 40) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures same as back armhole. Bind off shoulder same as back shoulder.

RIGHT FRONT: Work same as left front, reversing the shaping, starting the ribbing with P 2, K 2, working the first 6 sts at front edge in garter st and next 10 sts in pattern, working buttonholes 2 sts from front edge.

BUTTONHOLES: K 2, yarn over needle twice, K 2 tog, K 2. On the following row K the yarn over st. Work first button­hole in the 7th row from beginning, then space buttonholes about 2¼ inches apart (8 buttonholes).

SLEEVES: On No. 1 needles cast on 76 (80, 84) sts and work in ribbing for 2 inches increasing 12 sts evenly spaced on last row of ribbing, 88 (92, 96) sts. Change to No. 2 needles and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st on each side every 2 inches until there are 98 (102, 106) sts on needle. Work even until sleeve measures 17 (17½, 18) inches from the beginning or length desired.
Next 2 Rows—Bind off 7 (8, 9) sts at the beginning of each row, then decrease 1 st on each side every other row until 24 sts remain, bind off.
Block each section. Sew seams and sew sleeves in position.

NECK BAND: On No. 1 needles pick up 128 (132, 136) sts around neck and work in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for ¾ inch, bind off.

TRIM: Using 8 strands of Green Rayon, and starting at lower edge of front, work through the 2 rows of eyelets using an overcast st. With Yellow, work back in same manner having the sts cross at center, or trim as illustrated.
