Directions are given for size 38. Sizes 40 and 42 are given in brackets.
BACK: With Black on No. 1 needles, cast on 136 (144, 152) sts and work in ribbing of K 2, P 2 for 3 (3½, 4) inches. Change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st (K 1 row, P 1 row) until back measures 15 (15½, 16) inches from the beginning.
Next 2 Rows—Bind off 10 (10, 10) sts at the beginning of each row, then decrease 1 st on each side every row until 100 (108, 116) sts remain. Work even until armhole measures 9 (9½, 10) inches from 1st decreasing point.
Next 6 Rows—Bind off 10 (11, 12) sts at the beginning of each row. Bind off remaining 40 (42, 44) sts for back of neck.
FRONT: With Black on No. 1 needles cast on 136 (144, 148) sts and work in ribbing for 3 (3½, 4) inches. Change to No. 3 needles and working in stockinette st, attach Scarlet, K 1, * pick up Black (when changing colors always pick up new color from underneath color which is dropped, thus twisting yarn to avoid a hole), K 1, drop Black, pick up Scarlet, K 1, repeat from * across row. Work 25 rows following chart. Then repeat the last 26 rows for remainder of front. Work even until front measures same as back to underarm. Keeping pattern even, shape armhole same as back armhole. Work even in pattern until armhole measures 1½ inches from 1st decreasing point ending on right side.
Next Row—Work in pattern across 50 (54, 58) sts, tie in another ball of yarn and work both sides at same time.
Next Row—Decrease 1 st at neck edge, then decrease 1 st at neck edge every 4th row 19 (20, 21) times. Work even in pattern until armhole measures same as back armhole. Bind off shoulders same as back shoulders.
Back Neck Band: With Black on No. 1 needles pick up 40 (42, 44) sts and work in ribbing for ¾ inch, bind off.
Left Front Neck Band: With Black starting at shoulder on No. 1 needles pick up 90 (94, 98) sts, work in ribbing for ¾ inch, decreasing 1 st at center front every row, bind off.
Right Front Neck Band: Starting at center front, pick up 90 (94, 98) sts and work same as left front. Sew shoulder seams. Sew ribbing at center front.
