"Platter Pad" for 8 x 11 or 10 x 15 inch serving platter
Materials Required: 1 skein white, 2 skeins colored Lily Rug Yarn (for pair). Number 2 (standard size) 14 inch steel or aluminum knitting needles.
Gauge: 9 rows = 1 inch; 5 stitches = 1 inch
Cast on 25 sts using colored yarn. ROW 1: Knit. ROW 2: Sl st, K 1 st, Y O, K 22 sts, leaving 1 st on needle. ROW 3: Turn, sl st, K 24 sts. ROW 4: Repeat row 2, leaving 2 sts on needle. ROW 5: Repeat row 3. ROW 6: Bind off 2 sts, K 21 sts, leaving 3 sts. ROW 7: Turn, sl st, K 21 sts. ROW 8: Sl st, K 1 st, Y O, K 19 sts, leaving 4 sts. ROW 9: Repeat row 7. ROW 10: Repeat row 8, leaving 5 sts. ROW 11: Repeat row 7. ROW 12: Bind off 2 sts, K 18 sts, leaving 6 sts. ROW 13: Turn, sl st, K 18 sts. ROW 14: Sl st, K 1 st, Y O, K 16 sts, leaving 7 sts. ROW 15: Repeat row 13. ROW 16: Repeat row 14, leaving 8 sts. ROW 17: Repeat row 13. ROW 18: Bind off 2 sts, K 15 sts, leaving 9 sts. ROW 19: Turn, sl st, K 15 sts. ROW 20: Sl st, K 16 sts.
Change to white yarn. Repeat above 20 rows twice. Work fourth section in colored yarn. After last pattern row continue with color and working on wrong side, pick up 25 sts on beg. of work. * Next row: Sl st, K 1 st, Y O, K across row. Repeat this row 3 times more. NEXT ROW: Bind off 2 sts, K across row. Repeat last row once more. Repeat from * until piece measures 7 inches from 4 wedge patterns.
On wrong side of work K 25 sts, leaving remaining 25 sts on other needle. Turn and beg. working section pattern in colored yarn. Work next 2 sections in white, 4th in color. After last pattern row leave sts on needle. With right side of work tog. weave in Kitchener st to complete oval "Platter Pad" 10 x 15 inches. See following instructions for smaller "Platter Pad" 8 x 10 inches. Both sizes may be made for a gift of the matched pair.
For smaller size cast on 17 sts using color. ROW 1: Knit. ROW 2: Sl st, K 1, Y O, K 14 sts, leaving 1 st on needle. ROW 3: Turn, sl st, K 16 sts. ROW 4: Repeat row 2, leaving 2 sts on needle. ROW 10: Repeat row 8, leaving 5 sts. ROW 11: Repeat row 7. ROW 12: Bind off 2 sts, K 10 sts, leaving 6 sts. ROW 13: Turn, sl st, K 10 sts. ROW 14: Sl st, K 1 st, Y O, K 8 sts, leaving 7 sts. ROW 15: Repeat row 13. ROW 16: Repeat row 14, leaving 8 sts. ROW 17: Repeat row 13. ROW 18: Bind off 2 sts, K 7 sts, leaving 9 sts. ROW 19: Turn, sl st, K 7 sts. ROW 20: Sl st, K 16 sts.
Change to white yarn. Repeat above 20 rows twice. Work 4th section in color. After last pattern row continue with color and working on wrong side, pick up 17 sts on beg. of work. * NEXT ROW: Sl st, K 1 st, Y O, K across. Repeat this row 3 times more. NEXT ROW: Bind off 2 sts, K across. Repeat last row once more. Repeat from * 6 more times. On wrong side of work K 17 sts, leave remaining 17 sts on other needle, turn and beg. working section pattern in color. Work next 2 sections in white and 4th section in color. Complete hot pad same as for larger size, preceding.
