Jack Frost Knitting Worsted—2-oz.

RIGHT MITTEN: Cast on 30 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2¼ in. K 1 row, P 1 row, then start thumb gusset as follows: K 14, increase 1 st in each of next 2 sts, K 14. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—K 14, increase 1 st in next st, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 14. Row 4—Purl. Row 5—K 14, increase 1 st in next st, K 4, increase 1 st in next st, K 14. Row 6—Purl. Continue increasing in the above manner having 2 more sts between increases every other row until there are 8 sts between increased sts. P 1 row after last increased row, then work as follows: K 15; place on st-holder. K next 10 sts for thumb. Place remaining 15 sts on 2nd st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st for 7 rows. Decrease tip of thumb as follows: Row 1—K 2 tog. across row. Row 2—P 2 tog. twice, K 1. Draw all sts tog. and fasten off. Sew thumb seam.
   Place the 15 sts from first st-holder to Needle, attach yarn, pick up 2 sts at base of thumb. Place remaining 15 sts from 2nd st-holder to left hand Needle and K across row. Work back and forth in stockinette st for 16 rows. P 1 row decreasing 1 st at each end (30 sts). Starting on right side, decrease tip of mitten as follows: Row 1—K 1, K 2 tog., K 9, slip next st, K 1, P S S O (pass slipped st over the K st), K 2, K 2 tog., K 9, slip 1 st, K 1 st, P S S O, K 1. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—K 1, K 2 tog., K 7, slip 1 st, K 1 st, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 7, slip 1 st, K 1 st, P S S O, K 1. Row 4—Purl. Row 5—K 1, K 2 tog., K 5, slip 1 st, K 1 st, P S S O, K 2, K 2 tog., K 5, slip 1 st, K 1 st, P S S O, K 1. Row 6—Purl.
   Weave or sew tip of mitten tog. Sew side seam.
   Embroider in cross st as illustrated. See chart.
LEFT MITTEN: Work as given for right mitten.
   These mittens may be made in size 6 to 8 by casting on 33 sts for cuff and working in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2¾ in. then follow instructions as given for No. 5609. For variation see No. 5618 which are made with Ombre Rainbow yarn.
