RIGHT MITTEN: With Willow Yarn or double strands of Knitting Worsted, cast on 22 sts (size 6 to 8, 24 sts—8 to 10, 26 sts). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 15 rows (size 6 to 8, 17 rows—8 to 10, 20 rows). P 1 row decreasing 2 sts in center of row. K 1 row, P 1 row, then start thumb gusset as follows: K 9, increase 1 st in each of next 2 sts, K 9 (for size 6 to 8, K 10 before and after the increases—for size 8 to 10, K 11 before and after the increases). P 1 row. K 9, increase 1 st in next st, K 2, increase 1 st in next st, K 9. Continue increasing as described above, having 2 more sts between increases every other row with 1 P row in between until there are 6 sts between increases for size 4 to 6 (8 sts for size 6 to 8 and 8 to 10), then work as follows: K 10, place on st-holder; K 8 (thumb sts), place remaining 10 sts on 2nd st-holder [size 6 to 8, work over 11 sts, place on st-holder; K 2 tog., K 8 (thumb sts), place remaining 11 sts on 2nd st-holder—size 8 to 10, work over 12 sts, place on st-holder; K 10 (thumb sts), place remaining 12 sts on 2nd st-holder.] Work back and forth on the thumb sts for 6 rows, then decrease as follows: * K 2 tog., K 1; repeat from * ending K 2 tog. On the next row, P 2 tog. across row ending P 1. For size 6 to 8, work in stockinette st over the 9 thumb sts for 7 rows, then decrease as follows: * K 1, K 2 tog.; repeat from * across row. P 2 tog. across next row. For size 8 to 10, work in stockinette st over the 10 thumb sts for 8 rows, then decrease as follows: * K 1, K 2 tog.; repeat from * across row ending K 1. P 2 tog. across next row, ending P 1. Draw remaining sts tog. and fasten off. Sew thumb seam.
Place the sts from first st-holder to Needle. Attach yarn and pick up 2 sts at base of thumb. Place remaining sts from 2nd st-holder to left hand Needle and K across row. Work in stockinette st until piece measures 2½ in. from base of thumb (size 6 to 8. 2¾ in.—8 to 10, 3 in). Decrease tip of mitten as follows: Row 1—K 2, * K 2 tog., K 3; repeat from * across row. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—* K 3, K 2 tog.; repeat from * across row. Row 4—Purl. Row 5—K 1, then K 2 tog. across row. Row 6—P 2 tog. across row. (Size 6 to 8: Row 1—K 2, K 2 tog., * K 3, K 2 tog.; repeat from * across row. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—K 1, * K 2 tog., K 3; repeat from * across row ending K 2 tog., K 1. Row 4—Purl. Row 5—* K 1, K 2 tog.; repeat from * across row. Row 6—P 2 tog. across row.—Size 8 to 10: Row 1—K 1, * K 2 tog., K 3; repeat from * across row. Row 2—Purl. Row 3—Repeat Row 1. Row 4—Purl. Row 5—K 2 tog., * K 1, K 2 tog.; repeat from * across row. Row 6—P 2 tog. across row). Draw remaining sts tog. and fasten off. Sew side seams.
