Sacque, Kimono and Bootees Pattern #5303

MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Baby Wool, 3 balls (¾ oz. balls) for Sacque; 5 balls for Kimono; 1 ball for Bootees … Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) … Bone Crochet Hook No. 2 … 3 yards of ribbon, ¼ inch wide.

GAUGE: (Moss st) 7 sts make 1 inch; 11 rows make 1 inch.

SACQUE OR KIMONO

Starting at lower edge, cast on 186 sts. 1st row: * K 1, p 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: * P 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately (moss st) once more. Now work in pattern as follows: 1st row: K 1, p 1, k 1 (border), * sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o., knit a st in the horizontal loop preceding next st (to be called make 1), k 1, make 1. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1 (border). 2nd row: P 1, k 1, p 1 (border), k across to last 3 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1 (border). 3rd row: K 1, p 1, k 1, * make 1, k 1, make 1, sl 1, k 2 tog, p.s.s.o. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1. 4th row: Re­peat 2nd row. These 4 rows constitute pattern. Repeat pattern until piece meas­ures 6 inches for Sacque, or 11½ inches for Kimono, ending with either the 2nd or 4th rows. For waistband, work as follows: 1st row: K 1, p 1, k 1, k 9, * k 2 tog, k 3. Repeat from * across to last 14 sts, k 2 tog, k 9, p 1, k 1, p 1 (153 sts). 2nd row: P 1, k 1, p 1, p across to last 3 sts, k 1, p 1, k 1 (153 sts). 3rd row: K 1, p 1, k 1, * O, k 2 tog, k 1. Repeat from * across to last 3 sts, p 1, k 1, p 1. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. Keeping the 3 sts of each border in moss st, work straight in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until waistband measures ½ inch. Now work 4 rows of moss st. Remainder of piece is worked in moss st as follows:

RIGHT FRONT … With right side facing, work across 38 sts, turn and work over this set of sts only, decreas­ing 1 st at inner edge (armhole edge) on next row and every other row there­after until 31 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 2½ inches from top of waistband.

To Shape Neck: Starting at front edge, bind off 2 sts on every other row until 21 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches from top of waistband. Bind off in pattern.

BACK … Attach yarn where sts were divided and work across next 77 sts, turn and work over these sts only, de­creasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every other row thereafter until 63 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches from top of waistband. Bind off.

LEFT FRONT … Attach yarn and work remaining 38 sts to correspond with Right Front. Bind off.

SLEEVES … Starting at lower edge, cast on 64 sts. Work 4 rows of moss st, then 8 rows of pattern st. Work remainder of sleeve in moss st, decreas­ing 1 st at both ends of next row and on one row every ¾ inch thereafter until 52 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches in all.

To Shape Top: Dec 1 st at end of each row until 40 sts remain. Bind off. Press pieces through damp cloth. Sew shoulder and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in. Work a row of sc along both front edges.

BEADING … With wrong side facing, attach yarn at front neck edge, ch 5, * skip ¼ inch on neck edge, dc in edge, ch 2. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Next row: * In next sp make sc, ch 3 and dc. Repeat from * across. Break off. Cut two 1-yard pieces of ribbon. Run one through neck bead­ing and other through eyelets of waist­band.

BOOTEES

Starting at top, cast on 36 sts. Work same as Sleeve for 12 rows. Then work 6 rows of moss st, 8 rows of pattern and 4 rows of moss st. Now work ankle band as follows: 1st row: K across. 2nd row: P across. 3rd row: * K 1, O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 4th row: P across. Continue in stockinette st until ankle band measures ½ inch. Work 4 rows of moss st. Remainder of piece is worked in moss st. For instep, work across 26 sts, turn and work across 16 sts. Work straight over these 16 sts for 2½ inches.

FOOT … Next row: Work over 16 sts of instep, pick up 16 sts along edge of instep, work across next 10 sts, turn. Following row: Work across 42 sts, pick up 16 sts along other edge of instep, work across remaining 10 sts (68 sts). Work 4 rows straight.

To Shape Toe: 1st row: Work across 26 sts, place a marker on needle, k 2 tog, work across next 12 sts, k 2 tog, place another marker on needle, work across remaining 26 sts. 2nd and all even rows: Work in pattern across. 3rd row: Work across, decreasing 1 st after the 1st marker and 1 st before the 2nd marker. 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th rows: Decreasing 1 st at both ends of piece, work same as 3rd row.
   Bind off. Sew seam. Press through damp cloth. Run ½ yard of ribbon through eyelets of ankle band. Make other bootee same as this.
