Boy's Shaker Knit Pull Over Pattern #409

8 and (10) year old

REQUIREMENTS:
Yarn or 20 ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted used 2 strands together.
YARN: 20 ounces of Extra Heavy Knitting
NEEDLES: 1-pr. #5 single pointed. 1-pr. #9 single pointed.
STITCH HOLDER

GAUGE: 4 sts to an inch. 6 rows to an inch.

BACK: Using the #5 needles cast on 58 (62) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches. Now change to the #9 needles and work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 10½ (11) inches in all, or as long as you wish up to the underarm. UNDERARM SHAPING: Bind off 3 (3) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, once at each side. Now decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row 2 (3) times. Work even until the armhole measures 6 (6½) inches above the underarm. SHOULDERS: Bind off 5 (5) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows, bind off 4 (4) sts at the beginning of the next 4 rows. Change to the smaller needles and work across row, increasing 4 sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 rows. Bind off very loosely.

FRONT: Work exactly as the back until the armhole measures 4½ (5) inches above the underarm bind off. NECK SHAPING: Work over 18 (19) sts; place the remaining sts onto a st holder to be worked later. Working on the sts that are on the needle; decrease 1 stitch at the neck edge every 5 (6) times. When the armhole measures the same as the back, from the armhole edge bind off 5 (5) sts once; bind off 4 (4) sts twice. Break yarn. Take 18 (19) sts from the armhole edge off the sts holder, tie yarn at the neck edge and work 2nd shoulder to correspond to the other.

LONG SLEEVES: Using the #5 needles cast on 30 (32) sts. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches. Now change to the #9 needles and work in stockinette stitch, increasing 1 stitch at each side of the work every 7th (8th) row until you have 46 (48) sts. Work even until the sleeve measures 15½ (16½) inches in all, or as long as you need up to the underarm. SHAPING: Bind off 3 (3) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Decrease 1 stitch at each side of the work every other row until 22 (22) sts remain on the needle. Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of every row until 10 sts remain. Bind off. Make the 2nd sleeve the same way.

FINISHING: With the finer needle pick up and knit 46 sts around the front of the neck. Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 rows. Bind off loosely. Sew shoulder, side seams, sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armhole matching the underarm seams.
