Size 12 Years

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Sports Yarn, 17 balls (1 oz. balls) of main color and 2 balls each of 2 contrasting colors referred to as A and B.
Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.
6 buttons.
A leather belt.
A 4-inch slide fastener.

Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

DRESS

Back. Starting at bottom of skirt, with main color, cast on 180 sts. 1st row: K 4, * attach color A and bring it in front of work, then k 1 with main color, bring color A to back of work, with main color k 2, attach color B and bring it in front of work, k 1 with main color, then put color B at back of work; with main color, k 10. Repeat from * across, ending row with k 4 of main color. 2nd row: With main color, p across. 3rd to 16th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows. 17th row: Attach color A and k across. Break off. 18th row: Attach color B, and p across. Break off. 19th row: Attach main color and k across. 20th row: P across. Repeat these 20 rows decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until 168 sts remain. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 94 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 19 inches. Now inc. 1 st at both ends of every 8th row until there are 106 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 25 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 80 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row 10 times. Then, on next row, bind off 3 sts, k across next 12 sts, bind off 20 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and continue across. Hereafter, continuing with shoulder shaping, dec. 1 st at neck edge each row, until all sts are worked off. Break off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond.

Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 180 sts and work in pattern as for Back until 168 sts remain. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 108 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 19 inches. Now inc. 1 st at both ends of 1 row, every inch until 118 sts are on needle. Work straight until piece measures 25 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows; then bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of the following 8 rows (84 sts remain). On next row, work in pattern across 1st 42 sts, turn (thus starting front opening). Work over these 42 sts only, until piece measures 4¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front opening, bind off 5 sts and continue across. Hereafter dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row 13 times; at the same time, when armhole measures 6 inches, shape shoulder by binding off 6 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are worked off.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 46 sts and work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 84 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 13 inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 10 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 18 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at outer edge, cast on 26 sts and work in pattern, casting on 7 sts at end of each row until there are 82 sts on needle, then cast on 21 sts at end of each of next 2 rows (124 sts). Hereafter work in pattern, decreasing 1 st at end of each row until 106 sts remain. Then on next row, dec. 16 sts at equal distances apart. Bind off.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew collar to neck edge. With main color work 1 row of s c along both sides of front opening, and 2 rows of s c around bottom of skirt, collar, and bottom of sleeves. Sew slide fastener along both sides of front opening.

JACKET

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 94 sts. Work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) increasing 1 st at both ends of one row every ½ inch until there are 112 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 88 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, to shape shoulders, bind off 4 sts at beginning of each row until 40 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 5 sts and p across, then cast on 3 sts. Hereafter work in stockinette st, casting on 3 sts at end of each p row (this is cut away edge at front), and increasing 1 st every ½ inch at underarm side until there are 62 sts on needle. Then continuing with underarm increases, keeping front edge straight, make a buttonhole 4 sts in from front edge after the 1st ½ inch and every 1¼ inch thereafter until 6 buttonholes are made. (To make a buttonhole, on 1 row bind off 2 sts; then, on next row cast on 2 sts to replace those bound off). But at the same time, when underarm measures same as back, shape armhole as follows: Starting at underarm side bind off 8 sts and continue across. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 48 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 10 sts (thus starting neck shaping) and continue across; then dec. 1 st at neck edge every other row 14 times; at the same time, when piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 4 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Pocket. Starting at bottom, cast on 21 sts and work in stockinette st for 3 inches. Bind off. Make another same as this.

Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew on pockets as in illustration. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Work a row of s c all around edges of Jacket and around armholes and pockets.
