Resort Coat Pattern #1131

Materials: Brook's Ripple Knit, 18 skeins of a light color and 14 skeins of a dark color.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size).
2 snap fasteners.

Measurements: Bust—34 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—17 inches. Length from nape of neck to hem—38 inches.

Gauge: 4 sts make 1 inch; 13 rows make 2 inches.

Back. Starting at bottom, with 2 strands of light color cast on 14 sts. * With 2 strands of dark color cast on 6 sts, with 2 strands of light color cast on 24 sts. Repeat from * once more. Then, with 2 strands of dark color cast on 6 sts and with 2 strands of light color cast on 14 sts (94 sts in all). Work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), working light color over light color and dark color over dark color, at the same time taking care to twist thread at back of work when changing from one color to the other. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches. Dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and continue as before until piece measures 7 inches. Break off, leaving ends about 4 inches long to fasten securely on wrong side of work. Attach 2 strands of dark color and work back and forth across entire row for 1¾ inches (10 rows—thus forming a horizontal stripe). These 8¾ inches constitute the pattern. Repeat these 8¾ inches, decreasing 1 st at both ends of one row every 4 inches until 80 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 28½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 2 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 62 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 18 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, with 2 strands of light color cast on 19 sts (side edge); with dark color cast on 6 sts, with light color cast on 24 sts, with dark color cast on 8 sts (front edge—57 sts on needle). Work in block pattern as for Back, keeping the 8 sts at front edge in moss st (on one row k 1, p 1 alternately across the 8 sts, and on next row p over the k sts and k over the p sts), at the same time decreasing 1 st at side edge on 1 row every 2½ inches, 4 times. Then dec. 1 st at side edge on 1 row every 3 inches, 6 times (47 sts remain). Work straight until piece measures 28½ inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at armhole edge, bind off 5 sts once and 2 sts every other row 3 times. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every 4th row 4 times (32 sts). Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then, starting at front edge, bind off 8 sts (thus starting neck shaping). Then dec. 1 st every other row all the way up to shoulder, but when piece measures 8 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, shape shoulder by binding off 3 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off.

Left Front. Work as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves (Epaulette): Starting at top, with 2 strands of light color, cast on 20 sts and work straight in stockinette st for 5 inches. Then cast on 2 sts at end of each of next 2 rows (24 sts). Attach dark color and k 1, then with light color work across 22 sts, attach 2 strands of dark color and k 1 (thus starting 2 vertical stripes). Hereafter continue as before, increasing 1 st at end of each row until there are 68 sts on needle but, when light block measures 7 inches deep, work a dark horizontal stripe as before. Then cast on 3 sts at end of each of next 2 rows (74 sts). Work 8 rows straight. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 8th row thereafter until 54 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 17 inches, measuring along underarm seam. Bind off.

Pockets. Starting at bottom, with 2 strands of dark color, cast on 32 sts and work in moss st for 7 inches. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at outer edge, with 2 strands of light color cast on 64 sts and work in moss st for 1¾ inches. On next row work across 1st 7 sts, attach 2 strands of dark color and k across next 50 sts, attach 2 strands of light color and work across remaining 7 sts. Hereafter continue in moss st across entire row, keeping the 7 sts at both ends in light color, until piece measures 4½ inches. Bind off.

Sew up side and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in, making two 1¼-inch darts at both sides of epaulette to form saddle shoulders. Sew epaulette over shoulder seams, turning edges under for square effect. Make a ¾-inch hem all around lower edges of coat and sleeves. Sew collar to neck edge, so that both fronts extend 1 inch beyond edges of collar. Sew on pockets as in illustration. Fasten neck edge with 2 snap fasteners.

Shoulder Paddings. Cut two pieces of buckram so that each will measure 4½ inches along top edge, 3½ inches at bottom edge and 4 inches on each of the two sides. Cover these pieces neatly with lining material and machine stitch entire piece to give stiffness. Then cut two pieces of lining material slightly larger than buckram and sew three sides together. Turn seams inside and pad with cotton batting. Sew this pad onto buckram piece along outer edges and quilt, if desired. Make another same as this. The 3½-inch edge is sewed 1 inch in from neck edge.
