Measurements: Bust—34 inches. Length from top of shoulder—20 inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—4½ inches.

Gauge: 12 sts make 1 inch; 15 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 216 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 180 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until there are 216 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches. On next row, * k 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (144 sts). Then k across following 3 rows. Hereafter work in yoke pattern as follows:

To Shape Armholes: 1st row: Bind off 8 sts, then * O, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: Bind off 8 sts and k across. 3rd and 4th rows: Bind off 3 sts and k across. 5th row: K 2 tog. (decrease) but winding thread around needle 3 times, * k next st winding thread around needle 3 times. Repeat from * across, decreasing last st. 6th row: K across, knitting the 3 overs as 1 st (thus making a row of long sts). 7th and 8th rows: K across, decreasing 1 st at both ends of each row. 9th row: Dec. 1 st, * k 2 tog., O. Repeat from * across, decreasing last st. 10th, 11th and 12th rows: K across, decreasing 1 st at both ends of 1st 2 rows only (110 sts remain). Hereafter work in yoke pattern, 5th to 12th rows incl., omitting decreases, until piece measures 4¾ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row work in pattern across 1st 55 sts, turn (thus starting center back opening). Work in pattern over these 55 sts only until piece measures 7½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 4 sts every other row (except the long st row) until 27 sts remain. Bind off remaining sts. Break off. Attach thread at base of opening and work opposite side to correspond.

Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 216 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 5th row until 198 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches. Then inc. 1 st at both ends of every 7th row until there are 228 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 11½ inches. On next row, * k 1, k 2 tog. Repeat from * across (152 sts). Then k across following 3 rows. Hereafter work in yoke pattern, shaping armholes as follows:

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 12 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows and 3 sts at beginning of each of the following 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of each row (except the row with long sts) until 104 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, work in pattern across 1st 48 sts, bind off 8 sts and continue in pattern across remaining 48 sts. Hereafter work over these last 48 sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge each row 16 times. Work straight until piece measures 7½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Shape shoulder as before until all sts are worked off. Attach thread at opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 94 sts and work in garter st (k each row) for 6 rows. Then work in yoke pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until there are 104 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 32 sts remain. Bind off.

Collar. Starting at neck edge, cast on 252 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1¾ inches. Then bind off 49 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows and 26 sts at beginning of each of following 2 rows (102 sts). Then bind off 6 sts at beginning of each row until 18 sts remain. Bind off.

Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up underarm seams, leaving a 4-inch opening at left side, 3 inches up from lower edge. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in, easing in the extra fullness of sleeves at top edge. Sew collar all around neck edge as in illustration. Work a row of s c along center back opening, making 4 ch-10 buttonloops at equal distances apart. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Sew snap fasteners along side opening.
