DRESS

Blouse Front. Starting at bottom, with No. 3 straight needles and main color cast on 94 sts, and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 1 inch. Then increase 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are 112 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 7½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of following 4 rows. Now dec. 1 st at end of each row until 78 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. On next row, with right side of work toward you, k 24 sts, bind off 30 sts (thus starting neck shaping), and k across remaining 24 sts. Hereafter work over there 24 sts only until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 6 sts every other row until all sts are worked off. Attach yarn at opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond.

Right Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 48 sts and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at beginning of every 6th row (underarm side) only, until there are 54 sts on needle, but making a buttonhole 3 sts in from center back edge, after the first 1½ inches and every 2 inches thereafter, until 3 buttonholes in all are made (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 4 sts; then, on next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off). Work straight until piece measures 6 inches. Then, starting at center back, bind off 16 sts (thus shaping Back). Work over remaining 38 sts until piece measures 6½ inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm, bind off 5 sts once. Then dec. 1 st at armhole edge every other row until 24 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping; then shape shoulder as before.

Left Back. Work to correspond with Right Back, reversing shapings and omitting buttonholes.

Pockets. With contrasting color and No. 1 needles cast on 24 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 rows. Drop contrasting color, attach main color and work for 2 rows. Pick up contrasting color and work 2 more rows. Repeat these last 4 rows 2 more times. Then work as follows: Make 2 rows of main color, 1 row of contrasting color. Repeat these 3 rows once more. Then work 3 rows of main color, 1 row of contrasting color, and 3 rows of main color. Bind off. Make another same as this.

Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up side seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping, and leaving a 2-inch opening on left side. Overlap the center Backs 1 inch and sew together at lower edge. Make a narrow hem all around edges of blouse and around armholes, omitting lower edge. Place pockets on as in illustration, and sew in place. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Belt. Starting at one end, with No. 1 needles and contrasting color cast on 146 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 rows; drop contrasting color, attach main color and work 2 rows. Repeat these 4 rows until belt is desired width, ending with 2 rows of contrasting color. Bind off loosely.

Skirt. Starting at bottom, with circular needle and main color cast on 310 sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in stockinette st (k each rnd) for 4 inches. Then on next rnd dec. 10 sts at equal distances apart. * Work 3 inches straight. On next rnd dec. 10 sts as before but do not have decreases fall directly over those of previous rnd. Repeat from * 2 more times. ** Work 2 inches straight. Then dec. 10 sts as before. Repeat from ** 3 more times (230 sts). Work 1 inch straight. Hereafter dec. 10 sts on next rnd and one rnd every inch thereafter until 170 sts remain but, when piece measures 24 inches, work in rows instead of rnds (k 1 row, p 1 row), thus forming side opening. Work straight for length desired. Bind off. Work 2 rows of s c all around bottom of skirt. Sew skirt to blouse at waistline. Sew slide fastener along side opening.

BOLERO

Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 3 straight needles and contrasting color, cast on 50 sts and work in stockinette st, casting on 30 sts at end of each of next 2 rows (110 sts). Work straight until piece measures 5½ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row 14 times; and 1 st at both ends of every 4th row 3 times (84 sts). Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 3 sts at beginning of each row until 30 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 54 sts and work in stockinette st for 3 inches. Then dec. 1 st at front edge, on next row and every 8th row thereafter, 3 times in all (51 sts). Now dec. 1 st at front edge every 12th row 3 times. Work straight but, when underarm measures 6 inches, shape armhole as follows: Starting at underarm side, bind off 8 sts once, and 2 sts every other row twice. Then dec. 1 st every other row 9 times (27 sts). Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 3 sts every other row until all sts are worked off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, with contrasting color cast on 72 sts and work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 10th row, 3 times (78 sts). Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches. To shape top of sleeve, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 52 sts remain. Now dec. 1 st at end of each row until 40 sts remain. Then bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 16 sts remain. Bind off.

Sew up shoulder seams. Sew up underarm seams, easing in the extra fullness of Front 1½ inches down from armhole shaping. Find center top of sleeve and mark with a pin. Measure off 1½ inches on each side of pin and mark. Then measure off 2 inches on each side of these last 2 pins and mark (5 pin marks in all). Make a ½-inch dart at each pin, taking off ½ inch on each side of each pin, and graduating it into nothing 2 inches from top edge. Sew darts on wrong side (thus making 5 darts). Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Make a box pleat (2 inches long) at bottom edge of sleeve, making it deep enough to fit the arm of the individual and sew. Turn up ½-inch hem and sew in place with silk binding all around edges of jacket and bottom of sleeves.
