Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 6 balls.
Milward's Phantom Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size).
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.
7 buttons.

Measurements: Bust—34 inches. Length from top of shoulder—19¼ inches. Length of sleeve, underarm seam—6 inches.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 18 rows make 1 inch.

Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 135 sts and work in garter st (k each row), decreasing 1 st at both ends of every inch until piece measures 2 inches. Then, continuing decreases, work lace pattern as follows: 1st row: K 3, (O, k 2 tog., k 1) 15 times; k 35, k 3, (O, k 2 tog., k 1) 15 times. 2nd row: P 3, (O, p 2 tog., p 1) 15 times; k 35, p 3, (O, p 2 tog., pi) 15 times. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 5 inches in all (125 sts). Hereafter continue alternating 2-inch bands of garter st with 3-inch bands of lace, keeping the center 35 sts in garter st. Then on next row and every 7th row thereafter inc. 1 st at both ends until there are 153 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10¾ inches.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of each row until 117 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, working entirely in garter st after the 3rd lace band is completed. To shape shoulders, bind off 2 sts at beginning of each row until 53 sts remain. Bind off.

Right Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 87 sts and work in garter st, decreasing 1 st every 6th row on one side only (underarm edge) until piece measures 2 inches; at the same time, when piece measures 1½ inches and every 2½ inches thereafter, make a buttonhole 9 sts in from front edge until 7 buttonholes have been made (to make a buttonhole, on one row bind off 7 sts; on next row, cast on 7 sts to replace those bound off). Then, continuing decreases, starting at straight edge, work lace pattern as follows: 1st row: K 30, k 3, (O, k 2 tog., k 1) 17 times. 2nd row: P 3, (O, p 2 tog., k 1) 17 times; k 30. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 5 inches in all (81 sts). Hereafter continue alternating 2-inch bands of garter st with 3-inch bands of lace, keeping the 30 sts at center front in garter st. Then on next row and every 7th row thereafter inc. 1 st at underarm side until there are 95 sts on needle. Work straight until piece measures 10¾ inches.

To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm edge, bind off 9 sts every other row twice, and 2 sts every other row 3 times. Then dec. 1 st every other row until 63 sts remain. Work straight until piece measures 6 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, working entirely in garter st after the 3rd lace band is completed. Then, starting at center front edge, bind off 31 sts (thus starting neck shaping). Work across remaining 32 sts. Continue in pattern over these 32 sts only until piece measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulder, bind off 2 sts at armhole edge every other row until all sts are bound off.

Left Front. Work exactly as for Right Front, but omitting buttonholes and reversing shapings.

Sleeves. Starting at bottom, cast on 86 sts and work in garter st, increasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th row until piece measures 2 inches. Then, continuing increases, work lace pattern as follows: 1st row: K 3, * O, k 2 tog., k 1. Repeat from * across. 2nd row: P 3, * O, p 2 tog., p 1. Repeat from * across. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 5 inches in all (112 sts). Hereafter continue alternating 2-inch bands of garter st with 3-inch bands of lace. When piece measures 6 inches (116 sts), shape top of sleeve as follows: Bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then dec. 1 st at end of every row until 26 sts remain, working entirely in garter st after the 2nd lace band is completed. Bind off.

Sew up side and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes. Work a row of s c all around neck edge. Turn a ½-inch hem down Right Front and sew in place.
