British Classics Pullover Pattern #1056

Size 34

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 6 balls (1½ ounce balls). Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size).

Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

This slip-on starts at bottom of back, is worked up to shoulders and continued down the front.

Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 118 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2¼ inches. Then change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), keeping the first 2 sts and the last 2 sts in garter st until work measures 12 inches from top of waistband.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then work straight in stockinette st only until work measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then to shape neck on next k row, k across first 30 sts, bind off 40 sts (for back of neck), k across remaining 30 sts. Work over these last 30 sts as before, for ¾ inch keeping both edges straight. Then change to No. 1 needles, and work in garter st (k each row) for ¾ inch. Change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st for ¾ inch, ending with a k row. Break off. Attach yarn to opposite side of neck edge, and work other shoulder to correspond, ending with a p row. Do not break off, but cast on 40 sts (for front of neck), p across next 30 sts. Work in stockinette st for 5½ more inches. Then cast on 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows (118 sts). Work remainder of front to correspond with back. Bind off.

Sleeves. With right side of work toward you, starting at beginning of 9 sts bound off for armhole shaping, with No. 3 needles pick up 104 sts across armhole to corresponding position on other side. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row thereafter until 66 sts remain. Hereafter work in stockinette st straight until sleeve measures 17½ inches in all. Then change to No. 1 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3 inches. Bind off.

Neck Band. Holding right side of work toward you, with No. 1 needles pick up 48 sts along back of neck edge from 1st row of garter st on one shoulder, to 1st row of garter st on opposite shoulder. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch. Bind off loosely. Then with No. 1 needles pick up 64 sts along remainder of neck edge, and work in ribbing for 1 inch. Bind off loosely. Sew back and front neck bands together on wrong side. After work has been blocked, sew up underarm and sleeve seams.
