Size 38-40
Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Boucle, 13 balls. Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 2 (2¾ mm. size). 10 snap fasteners.
Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom of waistband, cast on 112 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3½ inches. Hereafter work in stockinette (k 1 row, p 1 row), increasing 1 st at both ends of one row every inch, until there are 124 sts on needle. Work straight until work measures 9½ inches from top of waistband.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 102 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending with a k row. Then work as follows: 1st row: P 22, k 58, p 22. 2nd row: K across. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat these 2 rows alternately, binding off 6 sts at beginning of each row (78 sts remain). 7th row: Bind off 6 sts, p across. 8th row: Bind off 6 sts, k 4, * k 2 together, thread over, repeat from * 28 more times, k 4. 9th row: Bind off 6 sts, p across. 10th, 11th and 12th rows: Bind off 6 sts, k across. 13th and 14th rows: K across. Bind off remaining 42 sts for back of neck.
Right Front. Starting at bottom of waistband, cast on 112 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3½ inches. Then work in pattern as follows: 1st row: P across to within 15 sts from end of row, then k 15 (this is front edge). 2nd row: K 1, k 2 together (thus decreasing 1 st), k across remaining sts (this is underarm side). 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately. 7th row: P across to within 3 sts from end of row, then k 3. 8th row: K 1, k 2 together twice (2 sts decreased), * thread over, k 2 together, repeat from * 4 more times, then k across remaining sts. 9th row: Same as 7th row. 10th row: Same as 2nd row. These last 10 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 10 rows, making an increase at underarm side every ½ inch for 14 more times. Then work in pattern without increasing at underarm side, until underarm measures same as underarm of back.
To Shape Armhole: Starting at underarm, bind off first 9 sts, and continue in pattern across. Then decrease 1 st at armhole edge each row for 5 times, continuing with pattern at front edge. Hereafter work in pattern as before until 30 sts remain. Then continue in pattern, but keeping both edges straight until armhole measures same as armhole of back. Shape shoulder as for back, keeping 15 sts at front edge in garter st.
Left Front. Starting at waistband, cast on 112 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for only ½ inch. Then continue with pattern as for right front, reversing underarm, armhole and front shapings to correspond.
Sleeves. Starting at wrist, cast on 50 sts and k across for 7 rows. 8th row: P across. 9th row: K 1, * thread over, k 2 together, repeat from * across, ending row with k 1. 10th row: P across. 11th to 16th rows incl: K across. Hereafter work in stockinette st, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row, and every inch thereafter until there are 66 sts on needle. Then increase 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there are 100 sts on needle. Work straight until sleeve measures 16½ inches in all.
To shape top of sleeve, bind off 7 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 26 sts remain. Bind off.
After all pieces have been blocked, sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in, folding extra fullness into a box pleat with a side pleat on each side at top of sleeve. Sew 5 snaps evenly spaced on right side along ribbing of left front, and along top of ribbing on wrong side of right front to correspond. Sew 5 snaps on left side of back waistband, and along open end of right front waistband to correspond.
