Size 34
Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Germantown, 11 balls (1 ounce balls). Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 6 (4¼ mm. size).
Gauge: 5 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.
Back. Starting at bottom, cast on 82 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 5 inches. Then increase 1 st at both ends of next row and every 1½ inches thereafter, until there are 92 sts on needle. Then work straight until work measures 15½ inches in all.
To Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each, row until 80 sts remain. Hereafter work in ribbing, decreasing 1 st at both ends of 1 row every inch until 76 sts remain. Work straight until work measures 7 inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. To shape shoulders, bind off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 8 rows. Continue in ribbing as before over remaining 36 sts for 4½ inches (for turn over collar). Bind off very loosely.
Front. Starting at bottom, cast on 82 sts. 1st row: K 1 and p 1 alternately across first 35 sts, then yarn over, k 2 together, k the next 9 sts, yarn over, k 2 together, then p 1 and k 1 alternately across remaining 34 sts, ending row with k 1. 2nd row: P 1 and k 1 alternately across first 34 sts, then p 2, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 2, then k 1 and p 1 alternately across remaining 34 sts, ending row with p 1. 3rd to 8th rows incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rows alternately. 9th row: K 1 and p 1 alternately across first 35 sts, yarn over, k 2 together, k 1, then make a cable (to make a cable, slip off next 3 sts on a stitch holder, keeping the stitch holder in back of work, k the next 3 sts, then k the 3 sts on stitch holder), k 2, yarn over, k 2 together, p 1 and k 1 alternately across remaining 34 sts, ending row with k 1. These last 8 rows (2nd to 9th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Repeat pattern, increasing at sides and shaping armholes as for back until armhole measures same as armhole of back. Then shape shoulders as before until 36 sts remain. Work over these 36 sts in ribbing only, for 4½ inches. Bind off very loosely.
Sleeves. Starting at wrist, cast on 36 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches. Increase 1 st at both ends of next row and every inch thereafter until there are 68 sts on needle. Then work in pattern straight until sleeve measures 19 inches from beginning. To shape top of sleeve, decrease 1 st at both ends of each row until 42 sts remain. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 20 sts remain. Now decrease 1 st at both ends of each row until 12 sts remain. Bind off.
Sew up underarm and shoulder seams. Sew up sleeve seams and sew sleeves in.
