British Classics Cardigan Pattern #1057

Size 34

Materials: Chadwick's Red Heart Shetland Floss, 6 balls (1½ ounce balls). Milward's Casein knitting pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size), and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size). 1½ yards of grosgrain ribbon 1 inch wide.

Gauge: 7 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.

Work starts at bottom of back, is worked up to the shoulders and continued down the front in two pieces (left and right front).

Back. Starting at bottom, with No. 1 needles cast on 118 sts and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2¼ inches. Then change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row), keeping the first 2 sts and the last 2 sts in garter st, until work measures 12 inches from top of waistband.

To Shape Armholes: Bind off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows. Then decrease 1 st at end of each row until 94 sts remain. Hereafter work straight in stockinette st until work measures 5½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping. Then to shape neck, on next k row, k across first 32 sts, bind off 30 sts (for back of neck), k across remaining 32 sts.

Left Front. Work over these last 32 sts for ½ inch. Then change to No. 1 needles and work in garter st (k each row) for ¾ inch. Change to No. 3 needles and work in stockinette st for ½ inch, ending with a p row. Then cast on 20 sts (for front neck). Hereafter work in stockinette st straight over these 52 sts, keeping the 7 sts at center front edge in garter st, until work measures 4½ inches from 20 sts cast on.

Then increase 1 st at armhole edge every other row until there are 55 sts on needle. Then cast on 9 sts at armhole edge (64 sts in all), and continue to work front as for back keeping the 7 sts at center front edge in garter st. Bind off loosely.

Right Front. Attach yarn at neck edge on opposite shoulder, and work to correspond with left front reversing armhole and neck shapings, at the same time making a buttonhole 3 sts in from center front edge after the first 2 inches, and every 3 inches thereafter until 6 buttonholes are made. (To make a buttonhole, bind off 4 sts on one row and on the next row, cast on 4 sts to replace those bound off.)

Sleeves. With right side of work toward you, starting at beginning of 9 sts bound off for armhole shaping, with No. 3 needles pick up 104 sts across armhole to corresponding position on other side. Work in stockinette st for 1 inch. Then decrease 1 st at both ends of next row and every 4th row thereafter until 66 sts remain. Hereafter work in stockinette st straight until sleeve measures 17½ inches in all. Then change to No. 1 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 3 inches. Bind off.

Neck Band. Starting at center front edge, holding right side of work toward you, with No. 1 needles pick up 96 sts all around neck edge, and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 1 inch, making a buttonhole as before after the 1st ½ inch on right side. Bind off loosely. Baste ribbon over entire center front border of left and right front up to neck edge (including neck band) and machine stitch in place all around edges of ribbon.

After work has been blocked, sew up underarm and sleeve seams. Then cut buttonholes on ribbon to correspond with buttonholes on jacket and with matching sewing thread, work buttonholes together with buttonhole stitches. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.
