Evening Sweater Pattern

Sizes 12, 14 and 16

Directions are given for Size 12.

Changes for Sizes 14 and 16 are in parentheses.

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MER­CERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 7 (8-9) balls of No. 12-A Blue Sparkle; and
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN" METALLIC, Art. A.64: 5 (6-7) balls of No. M.68 Skipper Blue.
Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 1 (2½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size);
OR
CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E.232 (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 12 (14-15) skeins of No. 848 Skipper Blue.
Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size) and 1 pair No. 5 (3¾ mm. size).
A 7-inch Coats & Clark's Crown "Trouble-Free" Zipper, Style F.11 for neck openings.
2 packages of Walco silver beads. Style No. 7305 … 1 vial of Walco silver beads. Style No. 7303 … 1 string of rhinestones.

NOTE: When working with "Speed-Cro-Sheen" and "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic, use one ball of each thread together throughout. When working with Knitting Worsted, use yarn single throughout.

GAUGE: 5½ sts make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

BACK … Starting at lower edge with No. 1 knitting pins and 1 ball each of "Speed-Cro-Sheen" and "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic (or No. 4 knitting pins and 1 strand of Knitting Worsted), cast on 76 (80-84) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches, increasing 1 st at the end of last row. Change to No. 3 knitting pins (or No. 5 knitting pins for Knitting Worsted) and work in pattern as follows: 1st row: With "Speed-Cro-Sheen" only (or Knitting Worsted), k across. 2nd row: With "Speed-Cro-Sheen" (or Knitting Worsted), p across. 3rd and 4th rows: Repeat first and 2nd rows. 5th row: Change to No. 1 knitting pins and with 1 strand of each thread (or No. 4 knitting pins and Knitting Worsted), work as follows: K 1, * p 1, k 1. Repeat from * across. 6th to 10th rows incl: Repeat 5th row. The last 10 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are on needle 89 (95-99) sts. Work without increasing until piece measures in all 10 (10½-11) inches.

To Shape Sleeves: Cast on 5 (5-3) sts at the beginning of next 2 (2-4) rows. There are on needle 99 (105-111) sts. Place a marker and work in pattern until piece measures 2½ inches from marker.

To Shape Neck: With right side of work facing, work in pattern across first 49 (52-55) sts, bind off next st (center st), work in pattern across next 49 (52-55) sts. Turn and work in pattern over the last set of sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every other row until there remain 39 (38-37) sts. Now dec 1 st at neck edge every row until there remain, ending at sleeve edge 27 (30-33) sts.

To Shape Top of Sleeve and Shoulder: Bind off 9 (10-11) sts at the beginning of next row and every other row 3 times in all.

Attach thread (or yarn) to opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond, reversing shapings.

FRONT … Work exactly as for Back until sleeve shaping has been completed. There are on needle 99 (105-111) sts.

To Shape Neck: With right side of work facing, work in pattern across first 49 (52-55) sts, bind off next st (center st) and work in pattern across next 49 (52-55) sts. Turn and work in pattern over the last set of sts only, decreasing 1 st at neck edge every 3rd row until there remain 39 (36-35) sts. On Size 12 only, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row until 27 sts remain; on Sizes 14 and 16, dec 1 st at neck edge every row until 30 (33) sts remain; ending at sleeve edge.

To Shape Top of Sleeve and Shoulder: Bind off 9 (10-11) sts at the beginning of next row and every other row at same edge 3 times in all.

Attach thread (or yarn) to opposite side of neck edge and work to correspond, reversing shapings.

FRONT NECKBAND … Attach 1 ball of each thread to left shoulder. With No. 1 knitting pins (or No. 4 knitting pins and Knitting Worsted) and right side of work facing, pick up and knit to where sts were divided 60 (64-68) sts, place a marker, pick up and knit 1 st at center of neck edge, place a marker, pick up and knit along other side of neck edge 60 (64-68) sts. Work in ribbing as follows: 1st row: * P 2, k 2. Repeat from * to center st, slip marker, p 1, slip marker, ** k 2, p 2. Repeat from ** to end of row. 2nd row: * K 2, p 2. Repeat from * to 4 sts before marker, k 2, p 2 tog, slip marker, k 1, slip marker, p 2 tog, ** k 2, p 2. Repeat from ** to last 2 sts, k 2. Work in this manner, decreasing 1 st before and after markers on every other row until Front Neckband measures 1 inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

BACK NECKBAND … Work exactly as for Front Neckband, having 40 (44-48) sts before and after markers when picking up sts.

SLEEVE BANDS … Sew up shoulder seams, including Neckband. With 1 ball of each thread, No. 1 knitting pins (or No. 4 knitting pins and Knitting Worsted) and right side of work facing, pick up and knit around sleeve edge 80 (88-92) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 inch. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

Block to measurements. Sew up right side seam, in­cluding sleeve seam. Sew left side seam including sleeve seam, leaving 7 inches free at bottom of seam for zipper. Make a row of sc along side opening. Sew in zipper. Trim with silver beads and rhinestones along neck and sleeve edges as illustrated.
