Sizes 10 to 12

REQUIREMENTS
YARN: 4-ounces of sock or sport yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pair #2 single pointed.
Two Stitch Holders.

GAUGE: 8 sts to an inch.

Starting at the cuff for all sizes cast on 68 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 4 inches. Then work in the following pattern:
1st row: K 12, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 24, p 2, k 6, p 2, k 12.
2nd row: P 12, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 24, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 12.
3rd row: Repeat 1st row.
4th row: Repeat 2nd row.
5th row: Repeat 1st row.
6th row: Repeat 2nd row.
7th row: K 12, p 2, slip the next 3 sts onto a dble pt needle and hold in back of work, knit the next 3 sts, knit the 3 sts off the dble pt needle, (cable), p 2, k 24, p 2, cable again on the next 6 sts, p 2, k 12.
8th row: P 12, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 24, k 2, p 6, k 2, p 12.
Repeat these 8 rows for the pattern until you come to the heel. Work until the piece measures 11½ inches in all, or any length desired, ending with 2nd row of pattern.

HEEL: K 17 sts, leave on the needle; place the next 34 sts for instep onto st holder; place the remaining 17 sts onto 2nd st holder. Working on the 17 sts in stockinette stitch for 28 rows, always slipping the first st on a purl row, ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF HEEL:
K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
k 8, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
k 4, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5. turn;
k 5, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6, turn;
k 6, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 7, turn;
k 7, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 8, turn;
k 8, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, (10 sts).
With the same needle, pick up and knit 15 sts along side of heel; knit the 34 sts off st holder; place all sts from the needle onto a free st holder. Knit 17 sts from st holder. Work in stockinette stitch for 29 rows, always slipping the first st on a knit row, ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
p 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;
p 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;
p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 6, turn;
p 6, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 7, turn;
p 7, P 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 8, turn;
p 8, p 2 tog, p 1, (10 sts).
With the same needle pick up and purl 15 sts along side of heel; place a marker on needle; purl 34 sts; place marker on needle; purl the remaining sts. DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, knit 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 34 sts; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 60 sts remain in all. Drop off markers. Now work even in stockinette stitch until the sock (measures from the back of the heel). (8-ins for size 10) (9-ins for size 11) (10-ins for size 12), or 2 inches less than the length needed, ending with a knit row. Purl 15 sts; place a marker on needle; purl 30 sts; place a marker on needle; purl the remaining 15 sts.

TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. NEXT ROW: Purl across row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 24 sts remain on the needle. Bind off and sew across toe having decreases at sides. Or weave the sts together. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.
