Sizes 6½ to 9

REQUIREMENTS
YARN: 2-ounces of 3-ply sock yarn or 3-ply sport yarn.
NEEDLES: 1-pair #2 single-pointed.
Two Stitch Holders.

GAUGE: 7½-sts to an inch.

Starting at the cuff cast on (52 sts–sizes 5½-7) (54 sts–sizes 7½-8) (56 sts–sizes 8½-9). Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 ins. On the last row decrease to: (45 sts) (47 sts) (49 sts). Now work in the following pattern: 1st row: K 1, p 1, repeat across row, ending with k 1. Repeat 1st row for the moss st pattern. Work in the pattern until the piece measures (4-ins.) (4½-ins.) (5-ins.) in all.

HEEL: K 13 sts, leave on the needle; place the next (19 sts) (21 sts) (23 sts) onto a st holder; for the instep; place the remaining 13 sts for 2nd half of heel onto 2nd st holder. Working on the sts that are on the needle, work in stockinette stitch always slipping the first st on a purl row for (20 rows) (22 rows) (24 rows), ending with a purl row.

SHAPING OF HEEL:
K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;
k 3, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;
k 4, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;
k 5, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6, turn;
k 6, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, (8 sts).
With the same needle pick up and knit along side of heel: (11 sts) (12 sts) (13 sts), knit across the sts of the instep from st holder. Take all these sts from the needle and place onto a free st holder. Knit the 13 sts from st holder. Work on these sts in stockinette stitch always slipping the first st on a knit row, for (21 rows) (23 rows) (25 rows), ending with a knit row.

SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:
P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;
p 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 1, turn;
p 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; s1 1, k 5, turn;
p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 6, turn;
p 6, p 2 tog, p 1, (8 sts).
With the same needle pick up and purl along side of heel; (11 sts) (12 sts) (13 sts); place a marker on the needle; moss st across the (19 sts) (21 sts) (23 sts) from the st holder for instep; place a marker on the needle; purl the remaining sts.

GUSSET DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; moss stitch a cross instep sts; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl to marker; slip marker; moss st instep sts; slip marker; purl the remaining sts. Repeat these last 2 rows until there remain on needle (45 sts) (47 sts) (49 sts). Drop off markers. Keeping 13 sts each end of work in stockinette stitch and the center sts in moss st, work until the sock measures (5 ins) (6 ins) (7 ins), from the back of the heel. (Note: From now on work in stockinette stitch across entire piece.) With the wrong side of the work facing you, purl 13 sts, (all sizes;) place a marker on the needle; purl (19 sts) (21 sts) (23 sts); place a marker on the needle; purl the remaining sts.

TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. NEXT ROW: Purl across, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until (11 sts) (13 sts) (13 sts), remain on the needle. Bind off and sew across toe, having decreases at sides. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.
