Size 6 Months to 1 Year

Materials—Fleisher’s Wonderized Babyfair, Pullover 2 balls, Cap 1 ball; or Fleisher’s Baby Zephyr, 3-fold, Pullover 2 balls, Cap 1 ball.
Fleisher’s Glo-Twist in Contrasting Color, 1 ball.

White Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Sizes 0 and 2.
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 5.

Gauge: 8 sts = 1 inch; 21 rows = 2 inches

Measurements—Chest 19 ½ ins. Length from lower edge to shoulder 9 ½ ins. Sleeves—Width 6 ½ ins.

Back—With size 0 needles, cast on 78 sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1 in. Change to size 2 needles. Work stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row) for 5 ¾ ins., desired length to underarm.

Armholes—Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows for underarm (70 sts). Work even until 2 ¾ ins. above underarm, end with p row.

Next row—Bind off 18 sts for shoulder, k until 34 sts on needle, bind off last 18 sts. Join yarn in last st and with size 0 needles work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 6 rows. Bind off in ribbing.

Front—Work same as back until 34 sts on needle for neck ribbing. Slip sts on holder.

Sleeves—With size 0 needles, cast on 32 sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1 ½ ins.

Inc row (right side)—K 4, * inc. 1 st in next st, k 3; repeat from * 6 times (39 sts). Change to size 2 needles. Work stockinette st; increasing 1 st each side every 6th row 7 times (53 sts). Work even until 4 ¾ ins. above ribbing. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows; 3 sts at beginning of next 12 rows. Work even on remaining 9 sts for 2 ¼ ins. for shoulder insert, end with k row. Slip 9 sts on holder for neck ribbing. Sew front edges of shoulder inserts to shoulder edges of front.

Front Neck Ribbing—Take up 9 sts of left shoulder insert, 34 sts of front neck and 9 sts of right shoulder insert on size 0 needle (52 sts). Beginning on wrong side, work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 6 rows. Bind off in ribbing.

Ruffles—With size 2 needles, cast on 45 sts.

First row (wrong side)—P 1, * k 3, p 1; repeat from * to end.

2nd row—K 1, * yo, p 3, yo, k 1; repeat from * to end (67 sts).

3rd row—P 2, * k 3, p 3; repeat from *, end k 3, p 2.

4th row—K 2, * yo, p 3, yo, k 3; repeat from *, end yo, p 3, yo, k 2.

5th row—P 3, * k 3, p 5; repeat from *, end k 3, p 3.

6th row—K 3, * yo, p 3, yo, k 5, repeat from *, end yo, p 3, yo, k 3 (111 sts).

7th row—P 4, * k 3, p 7; repeat from *, end k 3, p 4. Bind off as to k and p. With Glo-Twist work 1 row sc on the short sides and bound off edge, working from right side, keeping edges flat. Make two.

Finishing—Sew back of right shoulder to insert; sew edges of ribbing together. Sew left back shoulder to insert for 4 sts from armhole edge. Sew underarm and sleeve seams.

With yarn, work 2 rows sc on each side of left shoulder opening, working 3 buttonloops evenly spaced at front edge on 2nd row. Steam. Beginning on first row of neck ribbing, sew cast-on edge of ruffle on side edges of shoulder insert and across the 9 sts at top of sleeve, see illustration.

13 INCH RUFFLE CAP

With size 0 needles, cast on 108 sts. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1 ¾ ins. Cast on edge is gathered up to form center of crown. Work 8 sts, slip on holder for neck, work to within 8 sts of end, slip last 8 sts on holder. Change to size 2 needles. Work stockinette st (p 1 row, k 1 row) on 92 sts for 4 ½ ins., end with k row. K 1 row for ridge on right side. With size 0 needles, work ribbing for 8 rows (face ribbing). Bind off in ribbing. Do not break yarn. Pick up and k 28 sts on neck; take up and work 8 sts from holder, take up and work 8 sts of right side, pick up and k 28 sts on right neck edge. Work k 1, p 1 ribbing, on these 72 sts for 10 rows. Bind off in ribbing. Run a gathering through sts of cast-on row, draw up, leaving a hole of 1 in. diameter for center of crown. Sew back edges together up to neck ribbing.

Flower for Crown Center—With Glo-Twist, ch 5, join into a ring. * Ch 4, 5 tr (twice over hook) in ring, ch 3, 1 sc in ring; repeat from * 4 times. Fasten off. Sew edge of flower around edge of hole at center of crown. Steam.

Ruffle—Holding back of cap toward you, join yarn on right neck edge in first st of the ridge preceding the 8 rows of face ribbing. With size 2 needles, pick up and k 93 sts in ridge row. Work ruffle and crochet edge as on ruffle of pullover, omitting first row of ruffle, increasing 46 sts in each inc. row 3 times (231 sts).

Note: Ruffle may also be made to turn down as illustrated, by picking up from left to right side on ridge and working first row of ruffle as on pullover.

Trim with ribbon as illustrated.
