Size 4 and 6 Years

Instructions are written for size 4 years, changes for size 6 years are in parentheses.

Materials—Fleisher’s Superior Knitting Worsted, Jacket 3 skeins, Leggings 3 ½ skeins, Hood and Mittens 1 ½ skeins. A few yards of each of 3 Contrasting Colors for Embroidery.

White Knitting Needles, 1 pair each Sizes 2 and 4.
White Crochet Hook, Size 3.

Gauge: Stockinette st—6 sts = 1 inc; 15 rows = 2 inches

JACKET

Measurements—Width of back at underarm 12 ½ (13) ins.—of each front at underarm 8 (8 ¼) ins., including lap. Length from lower edge to back of neck 17 (18 ½) ins. Sleeves—Width 10 (10 ½) ins.

Back—With size 4 needles, cast on 76 (80) sts.

First row—right side—P 1, * k 2, p 2; repeat from *, end k 2, p 1.

2nd row—K 1, * p 2, k 2; repeat from *, end p 2, k 1. Repeat these 2 rows 3 times. Work stockinette st—k 1 row, p 1 row—until 10 ½ (11 ¾) ins. from beginning.

Armholes—Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows for underarm. Dec. 1 st each side every 2nd row 4 times; 60 (64 sts). Work even until 5 ½ (5 ¾) ins. above underarm.

Shoulders—Bind off 5 (6) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then 5 sts at beginning of next 6 rows; 20 (21) sts for each shoulder. Bind off 20 (22) sts.

Left Front—With size 4 needles, cast on 48 (50) sts.

First row—right side—P 1 (2) * k 2, p 2; repeat from *, end k 2, p 1 (2).

2nd row—K 1, (2), * p 2, k 2; repeat from *, end p 2, k 1 (2). Repeat first and 2nd row until 7 rows of ribbing.

Inc. row—wrong side—Inc. 1 st in first st (inc. 1 st in first st and k 1), * p 2, k 2, p 2, inc. 1 st in next st, k 1, repeat from *, end last repeat with inc. in last st (repeat from * to end); 55 (57) sts.

Pattern—First row—P 2 (3), * slip next 3 sts to hook, holding sts in front of work, k 2, p 1, then p 1, k 2 from hook—cable twist—p 3; repeat from *, end last repeat p 2 (3).

2nd row—K 2 (3), * p 2, k 2, p 2, k 3; repeat from *, end last repeat k 2 (3).

3rd row—P 2 (3), * k 2, p 2, k 2, p 3; repeat from *, end last repeat p 2 (3). Repeat 2nd and 3rd row 3 times; repeat 2nd row again. Repeat these 10 rows of pattern until 10 ½ (11 ¾) ins. from beginning, end with 10th pattern row.

Armhole—Bind off 5 sts at beginning of next row for underarm. Dec. 1 st at armhole edge every 2nd row 5 (6) times; 45 (46) sts. Work even until 4 ½ ins. above underarm, end with 3rd pattern row.

Neck and Shoulder Shaping—Bind off 11 sts at beginning of next row for neck edge. Dec. 1 st at neck edge every row until 5 ½ (5 ¾) ins. above underarm. Bind off 6 sts from armhole edge every 2nd row 4 times continuing decreases at neck edge until 10 (11) sts are decreased in all; 24 sts for shoulder.

Right Front—Cast on 48 (50) sts. Work as for left front until 2 rows of ribbing (for size 6, work until 4 pattern rows above ribbing).

Buttonhole—First row—right side—P 1 (3), k 2, bind off 1 st, slip last st worked from right to left hand needle, k this st and next st tog, finish row. Cast on 2 sts over the bound-off st in next row. Work to correspond to left front, repeating buttonhole every 19th and 20th row—in 2 p sts between cable twists—until 6 buttonholes in all. Finish to correspond to left front.

Sleeves—With size 2 needles, cast on 44 (48) sts. Work ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 ½ (3) ins. Change to size 4 needles, work stockinette st, increasing 1 st each side every 6th (8th) row 8 times; 60 (64) sts. Work even until 11 (133) ins. from beginning, or desired length to underarm. Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec. 1 st each side every 2nd row 9 (10) times. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 4 rows. Bind off 22 (24) sts.

Collar—Cast on 84 (93) sts.

First row—P 3, * k 2, p 2, k 2, p 3; repeat from * to end.

2nd row—K 3, * p 2, k 2, p 2, k 3; repeat from * to end. Repeat these 2 rows 3 times.

9th row—right side—P 3, twist cable as for first pattern row of front, p 3; repeat from * to end.

10th row—Same as 2nd row. Repeat first and 2nd row twice. Continue ribbing, binding off 12 (14) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then 10 sts at beginning of the following 4 rows. Bind off 20 (25) sts.

Finishing—Sew seams. Sew in sleeves with seam at center underarm. Sew shaped edge of collar to neck edge, to within 5 sts of front edges, sewing right side of collar to wrong side of jacket. Working from right side, work 1 row of sc on each front edge of collar, increasing at corner and spacing sts to keep and even edge. Working from right side, work 1 row of sc on 3 sides of collar, increasing at corners and working 1 sc in each st on cast-on edge. Finish buttonholes. Steam. Embroider fronts and collar as illustrated.

LEGGINGS

Measurements—Waist 24 (25) ins. Length from lower edge to crotch 16 (18) ins. Length from crotch to top of waist at front, including ribbing, 10 ½ (11) ins.

Left Leg—With size 4 needles, cast on 52 sts for lower edge. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 (3 ½) ins.

Inc. row—For size 4, k 3, * inc. 1 st in next st, k 1 *; repeat between *’s, end last repeat k 2; 76 sts (For size 6, inc. 1 st in every 2nd st 26 times; 78 sts). Work stockinette st, p 1 row, k 1 row, increasing 1 st each side every 6th row 15 (17) times; 106 (112) sts. Work even until 13 (14 ½) ins. above ribbing. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows for crotch. Dec. 1 st each side every 4th row 14 (15) times; 72 (76) sts. Work even until 8 (8 ½) ins. above crotch, end at back edge with a p row. Begin short rows.

First row—K 48 sts, turn.

2nd row—Slip 1, p to end.

3rd row—K 40, turn.

4th row—Same as 2nd row.

5th row—K 32, turn. Continue to work 8 sts less every 2nd row 3 times more.

12th row—Same as 2nd row.

Next row—K 7, with point of right needle, take up st directly below next—slipped st—place it on left needle, k this st together with slipped st to prevent hole, k to end of row working all slipped sts in this way. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 2 ½ ins. Bind off in ribbing.

Right Leg—Work same as left leg up to short rows, end at back edge with a k row. Begin short rows.

First row—P 48, turn.

2nd row—Slip 1, k to end. Work 10 more short rows to correspond to right leg.

Next row—P all sts working each slipped st together with st directly below. Finish as for right leg.

Straps—With size 4 needles, cast on 10 sts. Work stockinette st for 6 rows. Cast on 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.

Buttonhole—Work 5 rows on the first 10 sts only, end at center of strap, break off. Beginning at center work 5 rows on remaining 10 sts, end at side edge.

Next row—Work all 20 sts. Work stockinette st until 15 (17) ins. from buttonhole. Work a 2nd buttonhole. Work 1 row after buttonhole is completed. Bind off 5 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Work 6 rows even. Bind off. Make 2.

Finishing—Steam. Sew seam of each leg up to crotch. Sew front edges of each leg together above crotch. Sew back edges together, Fold narrow part of strap at each end into a point on wrong side and sew. Fold side edges over on wrong side and sew at center, leaving openings in seam opposite each buttonhole. Sew 4 buttons on ribbing at top of pants for straps.

HOOD

With size 4 needles, cast on 44 (48) sts. Work p 2, k 2 ribbing for 6 rows.

7th row—right side—P 2, k 2, yo, p 2 tog, k 2, p 2, k 2, * yo, k 2 tog, k 2; repeat from * to end.

8th row—P 34 (38), k 2, p 2, k 2, p 2, k 2.

9th row—P 2, twist cable on next 6 sts as for front of jacket, p 2, k 2 to within 2 sts of end, inc. 1 st in next st, k last st. Continue working 10 sts for front border in cable twist pattern and remaining sts in stockinette st, repeating increase at back of hood every 2nd row 5 times; 50 (54) sts. Work even until 9 ins. from beginning, end with 7th cable twist row. Mark this row for center of hood. Work other half of hood to correspond, decreasing 6 sts at back—instead of increasing, working first dec. at end of 12th cable twist row and 6th dec. at end of 13th cable twist row.

Next row—wrong side—P 2, * p 2 tog, yo, p 2; repeat from * to within 10 sts of end, k 2, p 2, k 2 tog, yo, p 2, k 2. Work 6 rows of p 2, k 2 ribbing. Bind off in ribbing.

Finishing—Fold in half. Sew back seam. Working from right side, work 1 row of sc on front of hood, holding edge in to about 16 ins. Steam. Embroider as illustrated.

Cord—Make a 32 in. ch, 1 slip st in each st.

MITTENS

Left Mitten—Cuff—With size 2 needles, cast on 40 sts. Work p 2, k 2 ribbing for 3 ins. Change to size 4 needles.

Hand—First row—right side—K 18, k 2 tog, k 4, p 2, twist cable on next 6 sts as for front of jacket, p 2, k 4, k 2 tog; 38 sts.

2nd row—P 5, k 2, p 2, k 2, p 2, k 2, p 23.

3rd row—K 23, p 2, k 2, p 2, k 2, p 2, k 5. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows 3 times, repeat 2nd row once more.

11th row—K 12 sts and place on holder for palm, k next 6 sts, place remaining 20 sts on holder.

Thumb—Cast on 6 sts, p 1 row, k 1 row on these 12 sts for 13 rows.

Next row—K 2 tog 6 times in succession. Break off. Draw end twice through remaining 6 sts. Fasten off. Sew side seam of thumb.

Holding point of needle toward thumb, slip 12 sts of palm to needle, join yarn and with same needle pick up and k 6 sts over cast-on sts of thumb, slip remaining 20 sts to free needle, work across these sts twisting cable; 38 sts. Work even on these sts for 20 rows twisting cable every 10th row.

First dec. row—wrong side—P 2 tog, p 3, k 2 tog, p 2, k 2, p 2, k 2 tog, p 3, p 2 tog twice, p to within 2 sts of end, p 2 tog; 32 sts.

2nd dec. row—* K 2 tog, k 2; repeat from * to end. P 1 row.

3rd dec. row—* K 2 tog, k 1; repeat from * to end; 16 sts. P 1 row. K 2 tog 8 times in succession. Finish as for thumb.

Right Mitten Cuff—With size 2 needles, cast on 40 sts. Work k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 ins. Change to size 4 needles.

Hand—First row—K 2 tog, k 4, p 2, twist cable on next 6 sts, p 2, k 4, k 2 tog, k 18. Work 8 rows even.

10th row—P 12 sts, place them on holder for palm, p 6, cast on 6 sts, place remaining 20 sts on holder. Complete as for left mitten. Sew seams. Steam. Embroider as illustrated.
