These instructions are for size forty.

Materials:

Columbia Spanish Knitting Worsted, 4 ounce skeins. 5 skeins Maroon, 8975.

Needles:

Columbia Celluloid or Boye Non-inflammable Needles, size 1.

Gauge:

8 sts = 1 inch. 11 rows = 1 inch.

Back:

Cast on 168 sts and work even in stockinette st for 17 inches. One inch from start, p 1 row on right side of work for turn of hem. To shape armhole, dec 1 st each side every other row 20 times. When armhole measures 8 ½ inches straight up from first dec at underarm, bind off 14 sts at the beginning of each of the next 2 rows, then bind off 13 sts at the beginning of each of the next 4 rows. Bind off remaining 48 sts.

Pocket Facing:

Cast on 40 sts and work even in stockinette st for 5 inches. Places these sts on a st pin. Make 2.

Left Front:

Cast on 76 sts and work even in stockinette st for 1 inch. P 1 row on right side for turn of hem. Cast on 16 sts at the beginning of the next row (front edge) and continue working in stockinette st. When work measures 1 inch from the 16 cast on sts, work a buttonhole as follows: Work 2 sts from front edge, bind off 4 sts, work 4 sts, bind off 4 sts and work to end of row. Next row, cast on 4 sts over those bound off. Work 2 buttonholes in this manner every 3 ¼ inches. When work measures 6 inches from start, work 16 sts from side edge place next 40 sts on a st pin, work across row. Next row, work 40 sts of pocket facing from st pin, and continue across row. When work measures 17 inches from start, dec 1 st at side edge every other row 16 times for armhole. At the same time, when work measures 19 inches from start, to shape V neck, dec 1 st at neck edge by knitting the 17th and 18th sts tog, then dec 1 st in same manner every other row 17 times more, then dec 1 st in same manner every third row 10 times more. When armhole measures 8 ½ inches straight up from the first dec at underarm, bind off 11 sts at armhole edge every other row twice. Then, at the same edge, bind off 10 sts, once more. On remaining 16 sts work even for 6 inches, bind off.

Work Right Front to correspond, omitting button-holes and reversing shaping, binding off 16 border sts at shoulder.

Sleeves:

Cast on 56 sts and work even in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 4 inches. Change to stockinette st and inc as follows: K 5, * inc 1 st in next st, k 2, repeat from * across row, ending, inc 1 st in next st, k 5. When work measures 4 ½ inches, inc 1 st each side, then inc 1 st each side every ¼ inch 4 times, then inc 1 st each side every ½ inch 27 times more (136 sts). Work even for 2 ½ inches. Then dec 1 st each side every row 22 times. Bind off remaining 92 sts.

To Assemble:

Sew shoulder seams; sew sleeves in place; sew underarm seams. Sew border to back of neck, joining on right shoulder. Turn back front and neck facing, matching buttonholes. Slip sts of pocket from st pin. P 1 row for turn of hem, work even for 1 inch, bind off. Turn under hem and sew in place.
