These instructions are for size 8.

Materials:

Columbia Spanish Knitting Worsted, 4 ounce skeins. 1 skein Brier Brown, 8213.

Needles:

Boye Steel Sock Needles, size 12.

Gauge:

9 sts = 1 inch.

Cast on 88 sts and work around 3 needles in k 2, p 2 ribbing for 3 inches. K 2 tog around row (44 sts). Work in plain knitting for 1 inch. Inc in every 4th st around row, 10 times (54 sts). Next row, start thumb as follows: Inc 1 st in first st of first needle, inc 1 st in next st, place a marker on needle and work around row. Work 2 rows even. Next row, inc in first st of first needle, k 2, inc in next st (st before marker). Continue to inc in first st of first needle and in st before marker every 3rd row until there are 22 sts on first needle before marker. Then k the first st of first needle, place next 20 sts on a st pin and continue around row. Work even on remaining sts for 3 ½ inches, then dec as follows:

At the beginning of first needle slip 1, k 1, pass the slip st over the k st, k 24, k 2 tog, slip 1, k 1, pass the slip st over the k st, k 24, k 2 tog (52 sts). Next row, slip 1, k 1, pass the slip st over the k st, k 22, k 2 tog, slip 1, k 1, pass the slip st over the k st, k 22, k 2 tog (48 sts). Continue decreasing in this manner until 8 sts remain. Weave together.

Slip 20 sts of thumb from st pin onto 3 needles and work even in plain knitting for 1 ½ inches. Next row, k 2 tog around row. K 1 row. Next row, k 2 tog around row. K 1 row. Draw remaining sts together.
