Punchinello Dog Sweater Pattern

Directions are for 18-inch length.
24-inch length is in parentheses.

MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E.232: Sweater A: 5 skeins (1 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins) of No. 676 Emerald for 18-inch length; 6 skeins for 24-inch length. Sweater B: 5 skeins of No. 909 Scarlet for 18-inch length; 6 skeins for 24-inch length. ... Milward's "Phantom" Aluminum Knitting Pins or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Knitting Pins, 1 pair No. 3 (3 mm. size) and 1 pair No. 4 (3½ mm. size). ... Milward's "Phantom" Aluminum Double- pointed Sock Needles, or Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Double- pointed Sock Needles, 1 set No. 3 (3 mm. size). ... Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 5. ... Few yards of multicolored yarn for Sweater A. ... 7 large beads and few yards of gold thread for Sweater B.

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at tail edge with No. 3 knitting pins, cast on 44 (52) sts. Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 rows. Still working in ribbing, inc 1 st at both ends of next row and every other row until there are on needle 56 (68) sts. Change to No. 4 knitting pins and work in stockinette st (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until piece measures in all 17 (22) inches. Break off and place sts on a double-pointed needle to be worked later for Collar.

GUSSET ... With No. 4 knitting pins, cast on 32 (38) sts. Work in stockinette st, decreasing 1 st at both ends of every 6th (8th) row until 20 (26) sts remain. Place a marker. Work without decreasing until piece measures in all 7 (10) inches. Place a marker. Still working in stockinette st, dec 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until there remain 4 (10) sts. On 24-inch Size Only: Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until 4 sts remain. Place these 4 sts onto the same double-pointed needle where the 56 (68) sts are. Divide sts among 3 needles and work in rnds of k 2, p 2 for Collar until piece measures 5 (5½) inches from first rnd of ribbing. Bind off loosely in ribbing.

Sew Gusset in place, leaving the space between markers on both sides free for front legs. With crochet hook make a row of sc along back and leg openings.

Sweater A: Fringe ... Cut 2 strands of multicolored yarn each 5 inches long. Fold strands in half to form loop, insert hook to any place of last rnd of Collar, pull loop through, draw ends through loop and pull up tightly. Make Fringe all around last rnd of Collar, using as many colors as desired. Trim ends evenly.

Sweater B: With crochet hook and gold thread make a chain to fit around Collar. Make a second chain slightly longer. Sew chains and beads in place as illustrated.
